While most of you have been following (or diligently ignoring, either way) my meticulous coverage of the DC cab changes (I myself am amazed I stuck it out this long) which I recapped alphabetically as:
a. Fenty Announces the meter switch
b. everyone (but the drivers) rejoice
c. The Drivers go on Halloween strikes
d. everyone is still able to get a cab on Halloween
e. Fenty announces the new (rather steep) rates for meters
and
f. backlash begins
and then yesterday, I received this letter and I figured, should you be the kind of person that WANTS TO TAKE ACTION, maybe you should read it. Ok? K.
Friends of reasonable taxi fares,If we don't act quickly the Mayor's proposed taxi fare plan will impose the highest taxi fares in the Nation on DC cab riders. Under the Mayor's plan, taking a DC cab one block will cost more than it does to take a Arlington, VA cab for a whole mile!
We are gaining momentum in our efforts- WJLA Channel 7 reported on our efforts yesterday, highlighting the petition and our grassroots fight and the Washington Post is writing an article for publication tomorrow. We need your continued help and support to fully engage our City's leadership and let them know that DC residents are very displeased with the proposed rate structure.
There are three actions you can take right now to help ensure DC residents will receive a taxi system that is honest and affordable:
1 – Write the Mayor, City Council, and the Taxicab Commission.
We have created a standard letter, and have linked to it below- just make any personal changes you like, and press send. It couldn't be easier, and we are hearing that we are actually starting to grab the Mayor's attention—let's make sure he hears us loud and clear.

2 – Make sure every supporter you know signs the online petition!
We have 700 signatures as of 11 AM Wednesday . While this sounds like a lot, there are 7,500 DC cab drivers out there that are in favor of the sky high taxi fares. The more people who sign the petition, the larger the impact our voice has with the City Council and the Mayor.

3- Attend the public hearing Councilmember Graham has scheduled.
Yes, we know it's at 2 PM on work day- DC cab drivers will be there in full force, but will consumers?
WHAT: Public Roundtable on Mayor's Proposed Rules for Taxicab Meters
WHERE: Council Chambers, John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW
WHEN: 2:00pm TO Late Evening on Thursday, November 8, 2007
Call 202-724-8181 if you would like to testify
Warmly,
DC Residents for Reasonable Taxi Fares
About us:
We are just a small group of DC residents, each with full-time day jobs. We are just trying to make sure the taxi fare debate receives the DC consumer's point of view. We love DC cabbies, but we just want to be able to afford to use them!
We are David versus Goliath. The taxi cab industry in the District is organized and looking out for their best interests--so we need to look out for the interests of those that depend on a taxi system that is honest and affordable: two attributes which are now in danger thanks to the Fenty Administration's proposed fare guidelines for the newly mandated taxi meters.
