Russell & Leo take over Eastern Market today

Russell & Leo take over Eastern Market today

September 5, 2007 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

After weeks of semi-lackluster star sightings, we have a doozy on our hands: Today, Eastern Market will be the site of a big-big-BIG Hollywood movie. With Russell Crowe and Leonardo Di Caprio. And helmed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator…as well as Hannibal and GI Jane, parts of which were also filmed in DC)
Are you excited?

Here is what to expect while wearing your starfucker helmet today:

The film (“Body of Lies”) is the William Monahan scripted adaptation of the David Ignatius novel in which Russell Crowe will play the manipulative CIA boss who teams up with operative Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) to trap a dangerous Al Qaeda leader by planting a bogus rumor that the bomber is in league with the Americans.

The Market will be seen on a normal day as vibrant and colorful with flower vendors and others plying their trade when suddenly there is a flash of light, sound and smoke to mimic an explosion in a car on 7th Street, SE in front of the Market.

Two cars will be mechanically overturned in the street and extras placed nearby will give added realism.

All special effects will be conducted in accordance with standards set by Fire Prevention Division, DC Fire Department. Most of the special effects however, will be incorporated into the scene using computer-generated images at the studio in Los Angeles.
(Sadness)

Anyhoo, the film crew spent the last two days transforming Eastern Market into a hubbub in Eastern Europe so, after receiving a tip from Ben we intrepidly sent Joel over with his kingpin photo camera to capture some of the changes taking place. So, here they are, all exclusive and stuff:

I totally walked through the filming today, because it was on my way to the metro. I was half-way to the metro when I realized I probably shouldn’t be walking through.

I normally make it a point to walk through movie sets. I love seeing the teenage PAs freaking out and trying to tell me not to walk through my own god damn town.

We turn over cars every day at Eastern Market. Usually the ones with VA and MD plates that park in the alley.

Just funnin.’ Ya’ll come.

this thing’s a block away from my apartment. at first, i thought it was neat, but it has become a perpetual annoyance.

i went home on lunch break, and they were setting up the mercedes to be flipped over. i grabbed my camera, and it died en route. :-(

Yes, about half an hour after we posted this we discovered the set was in Amsterdam.
Which, as we all know, bears an uncanny resemblance to Washington DC.
