It is comforting to know that, even if there is absolutely nothing going on in your life, whatsoever (and sometimes that happens) you can still rely on the DC cab bonanza to keep you busy and opinionated.
Lets recap the last 2 weeks:
a. Fenty Announces the meter switch
b. everyone (but the drivers) rejoice
c. The Drivers go on Halloween strikes
d. everyone is still able to get a cab on Halloween
e. Fenty announces the new (rather steep) rates for meters
and now...yes, of course,
(wt)f. a group forms and calls itself DC Residents for Reasonable Cab Fares and promptly posts an online petition asking Fenty to lower the proposed 4 dollar flag fare.
Much like the post last week Washingtonian went and did some calculating (if only we had interns to bully into computing stuff ALL DAY), mostly for places of their own interest ( I mean Four Seasons to The White House???) and found the following:
19th and K sts., NW, to Cannon House Office Building (Independence and New Jersey aves., SE)—3.1 miles.
Meter, $8.75; zone, $6.50.
The Palm restaurant (19th and M sts., NW) to Georgetown (35th and O sts., NW)—1.6 miles.
Meter, $6.50; zone, $8.80.
Four Seasons Hotel (2800 Pennsylvania Ave., NW) to the White House—1.4 miles.
Meter, $6.25; zone, $8.80.
Union Station to Dupont Circle (19th and P sts., NW)—3.8 miles.
Meter, $9.75; zone, $6.50.
Tenleytown (4200 Wisconsin Ave., NW) to 15th and K sts., NW—4.1 miles.
Meter, $10.25; zone, $11.
Logan Circle (11th and P sts., NW) to Reagan National Airport—6.6 miles.
Meter, $14; zone, $12.25.
Verizon Center (Sixth and F sts., NW) to Hay-Adams Hotel (16th and H sts., NW)—1.2 miles.
Meter, $6; zone, $6.50.
Adams Morgan (18th St. and Columbia Rd., NW) to RFK Stadium (2400 E. Capitol St., NE)—5 miles.
Meter, $11.75; zone, $11.
Cady’s Alley in Georgetown (3318 M St., NW) to Woodley Park (2800 block of Connecticut Ave., NW)—2.9 miles.
Meter, $8.50; zone, $6.50.
Do with it what you want.
The online petition is here. And as DCist (always on the transport news forefront) asked: will you sign it?
or just give up?

God loves a cheerful giver.
That's the most honky, crackered-out list of destinations I've ever read.
yeah seriously, it's like a georgetown intern featurette. next time im dining at the palm i'll certainly know the correct fare. the only slightly believable one on there is logan circle to National, but why not just take the yellow line? also, i guarantee that under the meter system, the cab will NOT be charging only $12.25 for that trip..
This is so fucked. These are just the base rates. There's also an idling fee of 25 cents/minute for sitting in traffic or whatever, and a rush-hour surcharge on top of that. With those additional fees, a $4 flag drop is crazy.
Thanks for covering this, by the way.
Washingtonian readers taking the Metro?? Come on.
While I definitely agree that we need a meter system in this city, I think that the taxi base fare is far too expensive. Why is it that residents (and tourist) cannot have an affordable transport system? From the overpriced and inefficient metro system, to cab, to gas prices, we just can't seem to catch a break.
