The only thing dumber than Freedom Fries is the idea of me writing this in french like I originally threatened to. Yeah.
Entirely undumb was L’Alliance Francaise de Washington’s Carte Blanche Sorée last thursday (May 1); a well-formulated excuse for wining, cheesin’, projected video watching and some DJ Neville Chamberlain, who got away with playing about two hours of bangin but unfrenchly bossa nova. Like a finely tuned mullet, this party was in the back, in a smaller carriage house, while the main biz of showcasing the Phillips’ collection of french art happened in the main building in the front. There was plenty of to-ing and fro-ing between locales while the sun was still up, but trust, folks got their thirsty fidget on after sunset. Between Neville and DJ Hervé’s sets was a 15 minute burst of hip hop infused modernity from the Culture Shock Dance Troupe.
The evening’s interesting incidental:
There was a gentleman in the house who was totally not interested in being photographed. “I hate this”, he told his lady friend. That was until he asked if I knew young Dakota Fine. I said “True” and the vibe shifted hugely to the positive. Me, happily outshined. And mildly buzzed by 9PM.

who can swing dance
