Its a free country.
Or maybe not.
Mediarama (new word, do you like it? anything to not say “blogosphere” ever again, really) of DC has been in a tizzy today over Brooke Oberwetter (the jokes I could make about that last name, but I won’t. I WON’T) getting arrested for (wait for it):
DANCING AT THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL.
dancing.
not even naked dancing or anything.
just dancing.
to her ipod apparently.
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I mean, being a hippie raver is kinda wrong, I admit, but certainly not illegal.
DCist sums up the whole Footloose adventure neatly, so we don’t have to.
Thank you DCist!
And someone else made these videos so you can relive the magic.
Thank you “someone else”!
part one: the fun
part two: the tears. and handcuffs
part three: Kevin Bacon.
(right now: seriously resisting the urge to youtube clips of every dancing movie ever made)
next week-we can maybe burn some books for shits and kicks?
You got served?
April 14, 2008 at 2:40 pmguess they didn’t have a permit and that’s the reason why they were removed? as swing dancers, we had to have permits for any dancing on or near monuments, be it a casual informal dance or an organized event like dclx.org
arrest seems excessive, though
April 14, 2008 at 3:59 pmI miss the (Bill) Clinton administration, if for no other reason than because, under this neo-fascist ruler Shrub and his police state, I couldn’t imagine repeating the fun time I had tripping my fucking balls off on the top step of the Lincoln Memorial at noon on July 4th. Arrest that, mother fucker!
April 14, 2008 at 7:57 pmdj_avid - you mean the Clinton Administration that shut down PA Ave and made it look like the West Bank?
April 15, 2008 at 8:27 amwas that christian siriano narrating the arrest?
April 15, 2008 at 1:49 pmMichael — you’re right, the same Clinton admin that killed welfare and bombed Balkan babies. It would have been much more accurate for me to say “I despised the Clinton admin a lot less than the current neo-fascist…” Guess that’s what I get for tryin’ to hate on that great welcomer of the popemobile that we have living on pa ave now…
Anywho, I probably need to trip more often, dance more often, both farther away from DC.
April 16, 2008 at 7:31 amIts so funny that you made this hillarious reference of dance and artistic censorship from the TJ Rave to the Movie Footloose. Great way to frame the subject in a humorus way. Looking back on Footloose (which i havent seen in like 20 years) its apparent that there werent any Black people in that town because they never woulda gone for that no dancing shit. There woulda been a riot!! And and horrible as all the townies danced, no wonder they were quarrantined to church-only related events.
- Great look on the story though Svet!
April 16, 2008 at 8:24 amkevin bacon turned this from a funny post into a really really funny post. should i feel bad that i don’t feel bad for the dancers? byt he way TJ was way envious of his much better dancing and close friend; george washington.
