Need Help? Tips to The Rescue!

Need Help? Tips to The Rescue!

June 24, 2008 by Libby Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

From a Reader via tips@brightestyoungthings.com:

Dear BYT,

I am a P.G. County kid moving to DC to go to Howard and wanted to know if you could direct me to any nice places to work that are not your usual fare of fast-food and retail (well, most retail). Sadly, I know very little about DC and i need to find work soon (I’ll be moving there in 6 days) because the money from my job at this paintball place in bowie has finally dwindled. -C.A.

Let’s help out a friend! You know what to do in the comments section, leave some:

Harry Ransom Says:

Oh man, Bowie. So close to DC and Baltimore, and yet so far removed from anything going on outside of the letter section neighborhoods. I remember friends skipping class on Fridays to recover from nights at Fever, and having no clue what was going on until I make the big leap to living in College Park.

Anyways, you could work at Urban Outfitters in Georgetown. At some point it seemed like everyone in a certain age range had worked there at some point. Bad advice, I know.

Maybe try to get a job at the Whole Foods? Or check out restaurants/bars on U St. NW, that’s close to the Howard campus.

If you’re willing to work the late-night shifts (10pm to 6am,) I’d highly suggest The Diner in Adams Morgan. Sure, it’s waiting tables, but there’s almost always business (even at 4am,) the managers are friendly and flexible, and the tips are great compared to other places. Not suggested if you’ve never waited tables before, though (the clientele WILL run you ragged.)

Try Garden District on 14th and S Streets NW. Great place to work it seems.

Bowie Rulez! Says:

Bowie is the shit.

From the I section to the S section, to South Bowie, to Old Bowie, it straight dominates.

For night life hit up Glory Days, Old Bowie Grille, or Duclaw.

If you need new sneakers, they got you at the Town Center.

Outdoor Adventures paintball is tight.

Swing by Allen Pond and drop in at the skate park.

Maybe swim a few laps at Belair Bath & Tennis before you sneak into the Belair Mansion.

Sometimes I get new keys made at Hardware City before I swing by JC Chasez’s house.

Bowie’s got what you need and more.

Well if you have experience in paintball perhaps after the SCOTUS releases their opinion on the DC gun ban tomorrow and it is favorable to the 2d Amendment advocates there will be guns hops opening in DC and you can get your foot in the door there.

Seriously though, it would help to know whre your interests lay.

i was at trader joes on sunday buying sausages and this bearded dude who was checking me out at the checkout was like so happy, so i asked him wtf he was smiling about and he goes “Oh I just love this job, even when it gets busy I just have so much fun here, it is very satisfying helping people and they treat us very well” and then his eyes got all crazy. anyway if you like being brainwashed that sounds like a pretty good place to work, plus you can steal grapes.

Thanks guys for the outpour of info (didn’t even know i could do that).

@Michael:Well I’m actually open to anything…I realize wont get automatically blessed with say, a job at some boutique or vintage shops, so I’m open to anything fun and flexible. I’m gonna be there for a month during the summer for this engineering program and I know i would have enough time to start working then soo yeah, hope that helps you come up with some stuff.

oh and guys, i want to meet you all! DC gets such a bad rap in PG because it’s close and in the shadow of NY. But i just know it’s wonderful in its own right…

Thanks again!

chuk,
dc has a bad rap in pg? i thought for sure that the thugs from dc were now scared to go into the wrong parts of pg.

best job to get while you’re in school is in the service industry because of the hours and relatively decent pay from tips. the sticky rice suggestion sounded good. if you’re from pg, you probably won’t be scared of the h street locals. i’ll be at sticky rice tonight singing a disco song and dedicating it to amy v.

dc a bad rap in pg… oh, boy…

I’m definitely going to look into that sticky rice suggestion. Ha i meant more in terms of cultural stuff like “fun” or “style” or “shopping” consider these are ignorant spoiled teens who think art is stapling a U.O. teeshirt to a wall and a performance worth finding must be an out-are-act to be good.

Sucks to care more than a little or none.

chuk, did you/do you run a streetstyle blog? i think i met you years ago when i used to work at urban, although i don’t remember if it was at the tyson’s or georgetown store.

@Jian: yeah man, definitely tysons, never been to Georgetown in my life. what’s up? sucks that i never stayed i contact man.

@Mike: thanks man

@(any/every)one: see, now I’m really trying to get at DURKL. I dont really do the day-glow earl eighties thing but the experience would be time well spent. Again thanks for you guy’s suggestions and comments…hopefully i can make it to the annals of this esteemed site someday for something.
