Last Saturday, Mr. Newly-Minted-Thirty-Something and HTML-Extraordinaire Jason, and I, spent the day at Spingarn High School in NE. No, we did not get lost on our way to the R & R. We actually intended to go there to participate in Hands on DC, an annual all volunteer project that improves the conditions of public schools in the District. It’s been around for 13 years, during which more than 26,000 volunteers have participated in creating a better learning environment in more than 120 schools. This year more than 2,500 volunteers spread out around 60 schools to paint, plant, mulch, and do other handy things. Jason and I painted doors. And let me tell you, they are the nicest, most bestest painted doors you’ll ever see. Photos below to prove it.
(Side note: Thank you, Jason, for catching me in one of the most embarrassing poses ever. Best not to say “cheese” while squatting.)
Jason and I had fun hanging out and working with other volunteers from around DC (I think we call that “branching out”?). We also got to hang with some of the kids who actually attend the high school. They claimed they were not bribed by their principal to be there, although the looks on their faces told another story.
It’s a fun, fulfilling, and fruitful five hours. We encourage all readers to participate to further the efforts. Visit handsondc.org for more information. And stay posted for a potential BYT Hands on DC Team next year.
