Brightest Young Things

While the perils of Halloween are numerous (and involve everything from your wig and arson mishaps, linen damage from makeup you forgot to take off and waking up next to someone whose only redeeming quality is that he was dressed up as Kirk Cameron the night before) DC party goers may have a bigger problem on their hands:

NO CABS that NIGHT.

After Fenty announced the switch from the zone system to meters last week and several strike threats, The United Cabs of DC decided to strike while iron is hot and alcohol blood levels are high.

According to the Post: "....D.C. taxicab drivers are set to strike for 24 hours beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday." and also published the following statement: "We just want to say to the mayor that we are in complete disagreement with him, and that we are opposed to time-and-distance meters," said William Wright, president of the Taxicab Industry Group, which is leading the strike. "We're going to do everything we can to overturn this decision. It doesn't mean there won't be other strikes."

Halloween is apparently, not picked on purpose, as a date (yeah, right)
but since Halloween is one of those days when police like to fill their DUI arrest quota for the year, the fact of the matter is you should
take the following precautions:

a. stay out only till midnight and take the metro (highly unlikely)
b. stay sober and drive (highly unlikelier)
c. make someone drive you (good luck with that)
d. stay within your neighborhood.
e. sleep over not with that Kirk-Cameron dressed mistake, but with some "I-live-in-the-ten-block-radius-from-here" mistake.

the choice is yours.

Fucking ridiculous. Cab/autorickshaw/sharevan/etc. drivers are the scum of the earth. Greedy, slimy pieces of shit...

Cale. Sure you can, but you get to ride on the tank facing the rear.

(Now people who read this will talk about how we're gay together. They will point at us when we are in public. In addition to saying we're associated with that horrible snobfest hipster bullshit webpage BYT, they will spread rumors about how we gay out. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Back on point, I kind of like that the cabbies are banding together, even if it is kind of the last stand of the Spartans against the inevitable. They don't like what's being forced upon them and they're letting that be known. Will it inconvenience people for a couple hours? Sure. How's that compare to what they feel is an inconvenience for the rest of their working careers? Perspective, folks, perspective.

So go Cabbies.

This is an outrage! It's like the elves going on strike before Christmas.

They can band together all they like. But they are still wrong. Still smell. Still can't follow directions. And still get me angry enough that i've broken 3 windows this year with my u-lock. Here's hoping for one last more before the christmas season.

Does this mean the SoberRide thing isn't happening? http://www.wrap.org/programs_adult1.html

It never really worked too well anyway

It has always been hard for me to catch a cab after midnight anyway. 75% + of the cabbies in this city can kiss my black ass.

meters are the best thing for the city. it's about time DC stepped it's game up. that zone system is the most ridiculous piece of crap ever made. luckily i've lived in DC for most of my life and pretty much know the zones. cab drivers have tried to rip me off NUMEROUS times. each time i tell them how much the fare SHOULD be and and ask them to prove it otherwise. they sheepishly agree and apologize. i hate to think what's happening to tourists and residents that aren't in the know. the meter system makes it very difficult to cheat a customer and is easy for everyone. look at the meter and pay what's there. no fuss, no muss...

i dont know about you, but i think it will be fine. considering that halloween is one of the best nights to score a good profit, i am counting on getting a cab home with no problems.
