God loves a cheerful giver.
The Sweater Set is awesome.
Well, this is certainly a good reflection of the music scene (or lack thereof) in DC.
We need some Max Levine, Ingrid, Turboslut, Corner Store Heroes, and this might be asking a little much but Ted Leo, Japanther, Stza, and Matt & Kim would be pretty wonderful.
and fuck it just while I'm wishing, Q and not U should get beck together.
this is beyond awful. worse than last year ...which is saying a lot.
max levine's played before, half of ingrid doesnt live in dc anymore, turboslut broke up, and japanther and matt & kim live far away from the district area
I think this year looks pretty rad. Soft Power is Mary Timony's new band. Title Tracks and Benjy Ferree are both great live. Imperial China, Caverns and Fffever are all awesome. Though I'm pretty sure who ever "Pree" is, the myspace page that fort reno has them at isn't correct
pree is may tabol's (ex-le loup's) new band.
this is pree:

there are so few shows this year! why is it stopping july 30th?
Money?
terrible
I find it hard to believe that with limited time, these were the best bands they could get. I guess that's what happens when people aren't term-limited.
i love fort reno. i wish all those dc bands in exile (the walkmen, the rapture, french kicks, ted leo, etc) would come and play fort reno. these bands should give back to where they came from.
asf, it would totally be great to have ted leo and the walkmen, etc play fort reno, but fort reno is for local bands. none of those bands are local. the walkmen are all individually from here, but they've never been a local band. ted leo is still considered local in many ways, but he hasn't lived here for years. french kicks haven't lived here for years either. so it's not that they're in exile, it's that they're not local. and fort reno is for local bands.
with regard to all the other comments, seriously, people need stop shitting so much on local bands and come out and support them. people wonder why there's no scene in dc, and it's the comments in a thread like this that indicative of this scene being weak. it's no wonder those bands all left, because people just don't support local bands like they used to. i'm not even talking about dischord's hayday. i'm talking even 6-7 years ago. maybe even less.
it's an honor to play fort reno, as any band picked or not picked would tell you. whether you agree or disagree with fort reno's selection, that's fine, but shitting on the bands that are picked is just bad for the scene. it breeds too much contempt between the people that support the scene and the bands that are in the scene. and none of it has anything to do with supporting fort reno. fort reno is great for the scene, and people should be supportive regardless (whether it's in person by going to the shows or just not shitting on it).
also, guys, Fort Reno isn't all about the music.
it's about getting a picnic and hanging out in the evening, and seeing bands you wouldn't necessarily pay $8 and definitely not $12 to see.
calm down.
supporting shit bands will not help this "scene" you speak of..
dude, all i'm saying is that shitting on them is unnecessary and breeds a lot of the contempt bands and people have for each other in dc.
negativity gets you nowhere.
constructive productivity gets you EVERYWHERE.
start a band. support a band. play fort reno. go to fort reno. play anywhere. go anywhere. just don't complain because you're bitter ted leo does not live here anymore. he won't come back just because you're bitter.
john, i agree with a lot of what you've said. however, your words would ring truer and stronger if Ft Reno was not in the business of picking and choosing which local bands to let play. there is, and always has been, a lot of politics involved in the booking of this event, and many local bands, even those that draw heavily, have been left out over the years for reasons i can only guess at. It's not just for local bands, it's for local bands that the certain people approve of.
also, this is not exactly representative of the scene at large (see my point above) nor has it been since maybe 2000. You can't say, 'it's all about supporting the scene' when Ft Reno has always attempted to perennially declare what the scene is and isn't.
all of that being said, I do love a good Caverns show.
harmoney, i don't think ft reno is claiming to declare what the scene is or isn't. you're probably right that they could probably pick something that is more representative of what the scene currently is (as a way to celebrate the bands that are bigger players in the scene). but they put on the shows, so they get to pick them. the method of how they pick them, i have no idea...sometimes it seems like it's their friends' bands, other times it seems totally random.
i'm totally with you on caverns. i'm really excited to see a band like that play to a bunch of people sitting on a lawn.
I'm not going to comment on the quality of bands and I do think positivity is important. But so is constructive criticism.
I haven't looked into every single act above, so I suppose I could be missing someone - but it seems a very obvious omission that there are no hip-hop or rap acts in this lineup. D.C. has TONS of talent in this category right now. No, Wale is probably too busy to come to Fort Reno. But what about Phil Ade, Diamond District, XO, Christylez - and I could go on and on - where are they? Are they not D.C. musicians? Why don't they count? What is wrong with bringing their audiences to Fort Reno?
Either out of incompetence, disinterest or exclusion, Fort Reno ignores our local black musicians, hip-hop artists and rapper and go-go bands. I could be wrong but I think UCB could turn out a bigger crowd and better show than most of those above. Maybe it's not crowds and energy that Fort Reno is looking for though. Maybe they're content to let it be the sorry atmosphere it has become. Maybe - no, let's make that definitely - there will be an outdoor music series next year in this city that will not exclude some of our most talented artist. Suit up.
To get on the bill, you had to submit a demo package! Maybe your favorite bands in the "scene" did not.
i remind people of that every year after the schedule comes out.
Bands and artists outside the Fort Reno clique (including some of those I described above) have submitted and not been accepted. But that's not the point - it's not really excusable for Fort Reno to sit back and accept applications without doing any outreach to other communities. If I have a scholarship fund for Laotian women that I only advertise at frat parties in Alabama, I'm probably not going to get many qualified submissions.
Hey complain some more about a free outdoor summer concert series.
Patrick from Caverns is Black. Nobody tell Fort Reno.
...and look up Godisheus.
i didnt make the bands in exile comment to complain about the bands playing. i love going to fort reno and seeing local bands. however, if they made an effort to reach out to big bands who have ties in dc and get them to come play it could really help reinvigorate the scene here.
imagine if you had all those bands mentioned before headlining nights with dc bands opening...it would give dc bands a lot of attention and just bring more people out to fort reno. i remember talking to one of the french kicks a few years ago at a show and asking them if they'd ever played fort reno and the guy said they would love to play.
ted leo does free shows in nyc every summer...it would be nice if he came back and played here (not that he owes us anything...it would just be really exciting).
man there are some great ideas here, I hope to see them come to life some day....
"scratch underneath the surface" GZA
some of you should go to a minor league bball game and complain theres no derek jeter..maybe the walkmen and ted leo should have submitted their demo like mine did.
