This past Friday night was the Nudie Jeans-sponsored Denim Maniacs Recycled Denim Fashion Show at The House of Sweden. The verdict: stylish people (SWEDISH), the pleasing to eyes-and-ears Division of Laura Lee (ALSO SWEDISH), and a pre-show rooftop party that included both a gorgeous view of the Kennedy Center AND hot dogs (COURTESY OF SWEDEN). What a night.
While the fashion show itself fell a bit short, aesthetically, of its recycled-and-reconstructed claims (less than a handful of looks qualified, though the rest of the pieces shown were, in typical Nudie fashion, 100% organic and sustainable), the event was certainly successful in highlighting the denim company’s partnership with Amnesty International. The artwork from Nudie’s most recent collaboration with Amnesty - a line of 30 tees, each designed by a different artist and illustrating an article in the UN Declaration - was showcased during the party, and the previous night at the Embassy saw “Clothing & Conscience,” a discussion about corporate social responsibility, sustainable fashion, labor rights, and THE LIKE in the era of fast fashion. While I can’t attest to the consciousness-raising/heartwarming-ness of that discourse (mostly because I WASN’T THERE), I CAN honestly say that the party on Friday was literally the best time I’ve ever had hanging out at the Georgetown Waterfront. October 9, 2008 at 12:51 amActually, I’m pretty sure that only a small portion of the Nudie collection is organic. Their press kit said that they have 20 styles of organic cotton jeans this season, their underwear is organic cotton and then some of their tops as well. They are trying to move toward organic cotton totally, but it is a slow process (for any company, really).
I think Nudie is def. doing good things, but the event HARDLY communicated all that they are doing in their supply chain with regards to labor rights and the environment and WHY ANYONE SHOULD CARE! Do most people even know what the term “corporate social responsibility” means? Do most people know what kind of conditions most of the jeans they own are made in? Sigh. Someday.

October 11, 2008 at 5:42 pmWas this a private event? Was it advertised anywhere? Bummed I missed it.
October 13, 2008 at 7:44 pmwell, for one, it was on our event calendar.
and i am certain other calendars as well.

That girl’s (rabbit?) fur vest is sick. I want it. Only if its vintage and not new bunnies being killed or whatever, of course. Unless whoever killed it recently ate the rabbit in a stew, in which case the fur is totally fair game.
