Each visit I make to the Hillyer Art Space bumps it further up my list of favorite places to happy hour in the city. Not just for the free or cheap booze, the dope dj selection, the Friday after-work scheduling, or the cool art that surrounds, but for all of the above. And the fact that people come fixing to get furiously loose and enjoy themselves, or bust. Last friday’s Scion-ponsored event was dj’d by Gavin Holland and Will Eastman — “two of the city’s titan djs” according to the well deserved pump in the Washington Post’s Nightlife Agenda Pick Of The Week — both of whom you can check this saturday at the 930 Club MSTRKRFT. Video was laptop-mixed live by Kylos and projected against the gallery’s one bare wall, sometimes right on to people who were dancing all dirty. In the front room of the space, viewers continued to get sucked into Anna U. Davis’ acid trips on canvas, some, while snacking on this baked crusted pasta thing from Chix that was just as rawsome cold as it probably would’ve been warm, and swigging keg beer or jug vino. Hillyer staffers Katherine, Sonia, Jen and Graham (and probably others) swill-filled cups, made beer runs and did all kinds of other shit, up to and including 11PM get-the-fuck-out that kept this friday night pre-game fluid, short and sweet.
