Since Washington Post decided that I know all there is to know about cheap dating (so help me God) and since despite the fact that Wall Street is rallying, the economic future hangs in the balance, and plus, I know you and how cheap you all are (don't even try to deny it) I am going to (sporadically, with hopes for "regularly") run my "
Cheap
Free Date" column, of free or almost free activities you can impress someone with.
So, here goes, shows, movies, etc, etc, mainly focusing on things you'd probably even pay money for if you had to. BUT YOU DON'T :
Tonight (Tuesday)
While Sticky Rice Karaoke is a good standby, there is actually a pretty jazzy show @ Dahlak which starts early, goes late and can feature food in between.
Wednesday
Free shows come and go, but today is a golden one: Shearwater brings their amazingly beautiful music to Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage. Walk on the terrace under the stars recommended for sealing the deal.
+
Bonus: Cassettes are hosting a preemptive listening party (for free) of their new CD @ Galaxy Hut, before they do their (not free, but worth it) CD Release party @ The Cat on Friday.
And while the Library of Congress and Freer and Sackler, my usual free movie stand-bys are taking a break this week/month, there is still a lot of really good cinematic fun for nothing:
National Portrait Gallery is showing Marlon Brando in his "I Could have been a Contender" star-making role in "On The Waterfront" at 7 pm
+
If you live in Arlington or don't mind going to Arlington, The Psychotronic Film Society's Miami Horror (the movie) is playing for nada at Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse.
Thursday
Corcoran is open late and is "pay what you can" on Thursdays. We thought you may need to be reminded of that.
+
Free show bonanza this week continues with Justin Jones at RNR Hotel, which, if you've ever seen Justin, you know, is always a good time.
+
For the artsy (and formerly Yugoslavian) among you, there is a top-notch documentary about Marina Abramovic being shown @ the Hirshhorn,
which can be neatly followed by a night of brazilian dancing @ St.EX
(going to St.EX IS always free, I know, but I will use any chance to pimp Neil's night out, because it deserves it)
Then....
its the weekend, so you can just wait for Best Weekend Bets or start religiously checking the calendar to see what else is up. And there's always giveaways. ALWAYS.
Your suggestions welcome
(as long as they are not painfully obvious like: Smithonian Museums are is free! To which I will reply: Really?)

God loves a cheerful giver.
Will admit that although he didn't want to like it, the Brazilian night at that lamentable place St. Ex (and we had such high hopes for it before it opened) is actually pretty decent, at least until it gets packed.
Beyond Happy Hour- [with it's rotating cast of the way awesome to the awesomely sucktastic dj's] is probably the cheapest free thing on the planet! Wednesdays Upstairs @ Skewars in Dupont... look it up... With 2 Dollar Blue Moons till late you're rather likely to get a lil more bang for your buck right?
be careful though, cause they don't take too kindly to kickballers... so leave your colors on the field boys.
The Studio Theatre is having free readings this weekend (Saturday and Sunday at 4pm) of Daniel MacIvor's "Confession". (MacIvor is the playwright/director of 2ndStage's "A Beautiful View"). Not sure what it's about but...free! theatre!
