Really, weekend already?
ALL READY!
Bad puns aside, it should be a great one. The weather is increasingly non-sucky (read:non-sticky) so we can expect at least a few weeks of Cale not bugging us to move to California “where the air is dry and swamp crotches don’t happen”. Though- Swamp crotches happen everywhere. People should know that.
Ok, so here we go, on a day by day basis.
Thursday
Normally a standard issue rager night in DC, this week the 4th day of the week looks decidedly classier in spirit. Shows wise, we recommend The Takka Takka/Oxford Collapse solid bill at the Cat, but really, its art party night:
whether you decide to go drink wine and look at Avedon portraits at the Corcoran, or block party it up at Art Whino, I just want to recommend checking out Phillipa Hughes’ hoogrrl blog because if there is an art event worth attending it this district, it is on there. And unlike my “Art Itinerary” she does update it every week.
Unrelatedly, my friend Rachel from LA is coming to town tonight.
Rachel is the coolest.
And I am not exaggerating.
She makes special effects special for a living, used to have a trampoline in her living room and when we’d stay with her she let us draw on her walls.
She is my best weekend bet.
If you see her, say HI. Maybe even hug her.
Friday
Since Thursday was so chill you’re well rested for the weekend. Catch up on your DVRs of Gossip Girl and 90210 while sipping prosecco with your girl/boyfriend and after a few “is it fall or is it summer?” outfit decisions, venture out into the wilderness that is tonight:
GREAT SHOWS ABOUND:
The Cut Copy/Presets juggernaut is sold out and while this could be devastating to some, the Black Kids/Virgins bill at The Cat is equally shake-your-tail-feathery
and there is a free awesome local show at GW and one of the last things Scott Verrastro curated at Velvet before abandoning DC for Philly: The Wall of Sound Fest.
All of these are recommended by us. Highly.
PLUS- Carl Craig is at LODA. and everyone and their long-lost mother is DJing at The Hotel
Saturday
Mall day!
The National Book Festival (the only “reason” to be excited Bush is president is that Laura is a librarian and does a bang-up job with this every year, even if Jenna is one of the “authors” present this year) with everyone from Salman Rushdie to Cokie Roberts to Francine Prose to Dionne Warwick (promoting her new and Christian children’s book) will be there. You should definitely go.
Buy some books.
Stack them neatly on your shelves.
Swear not to buy any more until you’ve read what you already own.
Promise.
Also, The Natural History Museum is opening its Ocean wing. I am so excited I cannot even stand it.
And a Brazilian music day at Georgetown. I love Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso so much I could die.
Now, after that whole day of extreme excitement (at least for me) pick your DJ night poison:
-Nouveau Riche is back (Gavin did a song of the day for us this week. It was cool)
-so is Bliss (Will did a song of the day for us this week. It was cool) with guest DJ Ed Dudes (Ed did a song of the day for us this week. It was cool)
-Thievery corporation is at ESL (DJing not playing. We should have asked Rob to do a song of the day for us this week, but we forgot, it happens)
Afterwards: curl up in a ball and die.
But hydrate and take some advil preemptively before you pass out.
You can thank me tomorrow.
Sunday
Goddamn Crafty Bastards is back.
The concept is great, supporting local designers is even better but it is a bit of a jungle and you ALWAYS overspend. Just tell yourself the point of it all is that you are getting all your holiday shopping in early.
After that, get some friends and throw yourself a picnic in someone’s back yard. Bust out some cookies and lemonade and citronella candles (people love picnics but mosquitos love picnics more), play some records and then if you are particularly ambitious, string up a screen and play yourself a movie. We just rewatched “2 Days in Paris” last week. It was just as good as the first time.. Or go out and cry your heart out while Diane Lane and Richard Gere find old-people-true-love in “Nights in Rodanthe”. I know I will.
Now tell us what we missed.
(probably plenty)
I think we get more suggestions for things already on our lists than the events we actually didn’t include.
September 25, 2008 at 3:26 pmnot to mention that bliss is ACTUALLY MENTIONED INSIDE best weekend bets as well.

September 25, 2008 at 4:03 pmRight - that’s what I was saying, albeit cryptically.
September 25, 2008 at 4:07 pmI promise to write a Sonic Circuits preview for tomorrow.
September 25, 2008 at 4:09 pmWill - the “model” in your Obama shirt pic is really creepy. I think it’s a combo of his photoshopped neck, hobbit hands, and extended arm pits.
the shirt though, is kick ass.

September 26, 2008 at 12:18 amCut Copy is the equivalent of listening to old peoples’ noses whistle whilst eating cucumber dill sandwhiches over the steady din of their dialysis pumps.
September 26, 2008 at 12:40 pmwhilst? gimme a break …
September 26, 2008 at 1:15 pm“Cut Copy is the equivalent of listening to old peoples’ noses whistle whilst eating cucumber dill sandwhiches over the steady din of their dialysis pumps.”
Hahahahaha. Wow. I totally disagree, but give you props, Luther, for the clever imagery.
