BYT Empire

Give a band an alphabet and they will show you some love for their city. Poor But Sexy which comes with some serious DC pedigree (the band was founded by David Brown, best known as the percussionist for Travis Morrison Hellfighters, along with Jason Caddell of Dismemberment Plan with the added support of Brandon Kalber on bass, keyboardist David Durst, and drummer Bruce Falconer) seemed like a perfect choice for it.
They bring their soul-filled rock (Express was caught comparing them to Steely Dan the other week, and we all know how we feel about Steely Dan) to IOTA this Sunday (along with BYT favorites PASH) so, sit down, kick back and let the love envelop you:

Azi's Cafe, from my days on 9th street, where the espresso is tight and Sam Cooke was usually on the boom box (db)

Pit Bulls - the most popular dog breed in Petworth. The ultimate hood hound. (jc)

C: Does everyone know the Corcoran has brunch? Washington National Cathedral is pretty cool when all lit up and has the famous Darth Vader gargoyle. (dd)

Dog parks - There are a lot of great places to take your pooch here. My dog thinks he's a cat and therefore has issues with other dogs but that doesn't meant we can't watch everyone else playing fetch. (bk)

Eastern Market - Rising like a phoenix from the ashes. (bf)

"Feel Like Makin" love by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway is my jam - esp. the D'angelo cover - and Roberta Flack is from DC. The Bad Company song is alright too. Now I seem to have revealed the formula to the PBS sound - oops! (db)

Green - the trees and parks in DC are the best of any city I've been to. (jc)

HR-57 -- I went once, and the music was so good I went right home and practiced. For hours. (dd) I used to lurk around the sessions at this joint too - love those red beans (db).

Inner Ear - So many great records have been made here by so many great DC bands. Plus, PBS recorded our first batch of tunes at Inner Ear. (bk)

January - No tourists standing on the left = sweet relief for us Metro trolls. (bf)

Kotobuki - The sushi joint in Palisades where the Beatles are always on the stereo. Get the Una Don set. (db)

Late afternoon thunderstorms in the summertime - weather is the best kind of drama. (jc)

M: Maroni Bros. Pizza. Like Pizzeria Paradiso and El Rinconcito combined. (dd/db)

Natural History Museum - I've taken my nieces and nephews here a lot. They always argue about going to go see the jewels or the dinosaur bones first and always want something from the gift shop, but it beats going to the movies. (bk)

Omni Shoreham Hotel - Making like a guest and crashing its swimming pool in summer. (bf)

Macitas de Puerco - This dish is my favorite at Lauriol Plaza. I know it's a zoo there all the time - but I would dine on the Metro at rush hour if they served these tasty pork morsels. (db)

Quadrant system - DC is the only city in America where you can (almost) be four places at once. (jc)

Run for Cover, the Black Cat's annual tribute band benefit show. It's gone now, but this his how three-fifths of Poor But Sexy started playing together, and things like this happen there: (dd/db)

(That's Bruce Falconer, our drummer as Axl. David B is playing drums, and David D. is playing the keyboards)

Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa (bk)

ryst - Those bathtub portraits behind the bar crack me up, and I swear the bald guy with the scruff is a dead ringer for Justin Timberlake. (bf)

Salon de Beliza Union - There are like 2 dozen places to get your hair cut within two blocks of my house on 14th street - but I cut my own until I found this place. (db)

Vietnam Veterans' Memorial - there are many great memorials in the city, but Maya Lin's granite masterpiece is one of the most sublime. (jc)

Wonderland, where old DC establishment signs go to die. (dd)

EquinoX- My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here a few weeks ago. They had a vegetarian tasting menu and paired each course with wine. They also had some crazy cheeses that completely changed my idea of what cheese is. (bk)

Yodeling - The accordion player at Cafe Mozart on Tuesday nights can really belt it out. (bf)

Zo! - I just read about this guy on DCist. I'm always finding new stuff to love about DC! (db)

Poor But Sexy? Isn't that how the mayor of Berlin describes the German metropolis?
