Our new BYGays project is off to the races and the ladies will not be left in the dust. This Friday, DC's lesbians and their friends are invited to the Duplex Diner to kick up their heels, hiking boots, or sensible shoes for an evening of drinks and dancing for Anniething Goes. The party's hostess, miss lesbanAnnie (aka vAnniety Kills) was kind enough to give our new Lesbian-In-Chief Deb the skinny on her upcoming women's happy hour at the Duplex Diner.
BYT: First things first, thank you for throwing this party. I'm always the first to complain that there's nothing for dykes to do in DC, but maybe I'm just out of the loop. What inspired this women's happy hour?
The pleasure is all mine, Deb! Believe it or not, there is actually quite a bit going on for women in DC. I guess it's a matter of what you're looking for and where, but I do understand where you're coming from.
I've been wanting to do a women's event for a while, but the timing wasn't quite right until now. For as long as I can remember I hear a lot of women complain about the lack of good music and venues for us.
Just this fall I started promoting/DJing my own club events in northeast DC and the turnout, feedback, and support has been amazing. The crowd has been a fun, diverse mix of people and a lot of my gay girlfriends have come out for these parties and had a blast. So I've been brainstorming potential venues to do an event and while catching up with a friend, Robert, who also promotes & DJs at Duplex Diner, he presented the idea of having a women's happy hour and, voila, everything fell into place and here we are. The response has been really positive so far.
(Editors note: That’s Robert of the monthly, gay 90s party Peach Pit at Dahlak. We love you Robert.)
BYT: Okay, so despite my complaining, I do appreciate that lots of events draw a pretty diverse mix of folks in DC (gay, straight, bent, you name it). And you've DJ'ed in a variety of venues. What kind of music do you typically like to spin? Will the ladies get treated to something special?
I love to play everything fun and dancey. It sometimes depends on the mood - be it mine, the crowd, both, or what have you. Lately, I've been playing a lot of house and 80's with a dash of indie and electro.
I go to many different parties with great vibes and DJs that play amazing underground music and I want to bring that energy and quality of music to women's events as well.
This Friday, I'll start off the evening with fun, light, sexy beats for the dinner crowd ...then I'll pick up the tempo as the evening progresses. Like I always say, 'Anniething goes' ...so who knows what else I'll throw out there. To answer your question, yes, I think the ladies will be treated to something special.
BYT: Ladies take note. So why the happy hour format versus a Friday night dance party?
I thought this would be a great way to unwind and start off your weekend properly mingling with friends new and old. It'll also be a good way for me socialize and get a feel for things. Now just because I did a happy hour doesn't mean a dance party isn't in the works. *wink*
