This week we have fire damage, a spilled secret, Himalayan food, organic food in CH and an opportunity to be famous.
On Saturday a fire in Penang on M Street destroyed the restaurant and damaged the adjacent Starbucks, Porter’s Dining Saloon and Chipotle. No answer when I called Porter’s so I don’t know if they are open. Starbucks confirmed to me that they are closed and the Chipotle is closed until further notice. Bummer for the lunch crowd. My recommendation is go check out Best Sandwich on 19th and L.
In ther interest of respecting the agreement with the Hummingbirg from Mars guys, I never chose to write about their speakeasy events. Metrocurean was given that opportunity and did a lovely job. Thanks to some jerk/intrepid reporter writing for the Post, the location was disclosed and the party is over. Hopefully the Hummingbird will fly again somewhere soon.
Prince of Petworth checked out the new Himalayan Heritage (RIP San Marco) in Adams-Morgan and has some nice pictures. Hopefully they serve risotto and grappa.
Richmond-based organic grocery store Ellwood Thompson is opening in Columbia Heights.
Want to be called a donkey? Hell’s Kitchen is casting in DC on Oct. 20th! Eww at the Hard Rock. Well I guess that works since no one goes there. Bad Alex.

the hummingbird story makes me sad.

Talk about idea thievery.
October 8, 2008 at 1:04 pmBest sandwich at 19th & L is the grilled tofu panini at Java Green
http://www.javagreencafe.com/
No really, it’s called “Best Sandwich.” It’s got an entrance on L, between 18th and 19th, behind the ATM next to borders. Seriously amazing.
But Java Green is amazing too. So either way, you win.
Shabba!
Best Sandwich makes super delicious sandwiches… and they have chocolate milk box cartons! mmmm
October 8, 2008 at 3:11 pmBest Sandwich place roasts their own turkey on the bone and makes really good turkey sandwiches…yum.
Also, I checked out the Himalayan place last night. They have two-for-one coupons on the website good ’til Oct 10. Review will come after another visit, but the food was good, the decor was cool, the staff was nice… the only downer was the beer selection. They were out of everything but Amstel, Heineken and Corona.
October 8, 2008 at 6:21 pmIt does appear that Himlayan Heritage kept two of San Marco’s chairs!!!
