This week we bring you a ton of new restaurant openings and not much else. Zagat’s reports that we are about to be inundated with loads of new places.
Gillian Clark (RIP Colorado Kitchen) will be opening her new Takoma Park restaurant by the end of the year. Avenue Oven will offer Eastern European takes on American food.
She is quoted saying, ”As far as the food goes, I’m stealing some from my NY Jew upbringing… I have always been taken by the immigrant’s take on American food (Colorado Kitchen of course was my Panamanian parent’s take on American food–Betty Crocker through my dad’s eyes). Look for a great Sunday Brunch that is very different from CK.”
Another Clark spot is scheduled to on Forest Glen much sooner than that. The General Store and Post Office Tavern will be a casual eatery with planned family-style Sunday suppers.

In the “upgrade” of the day, the former Viridian space will soon become Posto, Expected to open in little over a month the restaurant will be helmed by Tosca chef Massimo Fabbri and will share an owner with the upscale, downtown spot. Posto will have a brick pizza oven and will offer casual Italian with a focus on locally grown ingredients.
Columbia Heights continues to grow as a dining destination with the planned Royal Blue Bistro. This Mediterranean-themed wine bar and bistro will have Jawad Laouaouda, Khalid Raji and Rissa Pagsibigan behind it, all formerly of Citronelle.
The folks behind Tallula, Evening Star and Rustico are opening a spot on 14th Street off Logan Circle. Birch & Barley and Churchkey will offer a dining room downstairs and a pub upstairsand will serve hearty New American food and about 500 beers. (Winner!!!)

Apples and Bananas tells us that Agraria is planning on opening a second location downtown. Expect this restaurant that focused on farm-fresh ingredients to open its doors on Sept. 8.
It’s also reported that M’Dawg has finally closed. But expect – wait for it – a frozen yogurt spot to open somewhere on that strip.
speaking of frozen yogurt, word on the street is that mr. yogato’s launching its chocolate flavor today?
August 13, 2008 at 1:24 pmHowdy Marc, nice to see you’ve finally found me hiding in the food area. There goes the neighborhood.
August 13, 2008 at 4:48 pmhow can you follow my “There goes the planet.” with your “There goes the neighborhood”?
You need to step it girl, take it to something like “There goes the sun, of there goes the universe.”
im kinda excited about the Forest Glen General Store.. it’s about two blocks from the house I grew up in and it’s a really historic building.
August 13, 2008 at 7:35 pmThings to do way out here in Maryland? I thought everyone on this site was averse to setting foot outside the District. Love for Loda, plus this food writeup (omg, Forest Glen? That’s farther out than I am!) give me hope that love is building up for Takoma Park / Silver Spring. Before you know it I’ll be hosting dance parties at my (1/3 of a converted-to-apartments) house in East Silver Spring.
Don’t know if anyone else read the part in the linked-to forum about them having rules for kids at Colorado Kitchen which would extend to the new restaurants, but that’s fine by me. Sounds to me like the “rules” are probably rules parents should have for their kids in any public place except parks and anywhere else specifically designed for running around.
