The Daily Drink – New Yorker

The Daily Drink – New Yorker

January 16, 2009 by Danielle

Oh my. I saw this and loved the idea.

The New Yorker

  • 1 1/2 oz Bourbon
  • lime
  • Couple dashes of grenadine

Pour Bourbon over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass.  Squeeze lime wedge into drink and drop into glass. Add a couple dashes of grenadine, and stir well to mix. “Dashes” is a highly subjective term, but use your best judgment.

I’m starting to think my frugality is becoming a hindrance. I saw in one recipe that whiskey could be an acceptable stand-in in lieu of real bourbon. So of course I used the remainder of what I had on hand – Jack Daniel’s, not remembering the big, ginormous difference between Tennessee whiskey and all others: before aging, it’s filtered through maple charcoal, giving it that distinct taste. When you mix it with grenadine and a smidge of lime, it smells like sour Dimetapp. It tasted like horribly sugary whiskey, like mixing Crystal Light and Nyquil but with a smoother viscosity. Tomorrow I’m getting some Maker’s Mark and doing this thing right. Or maybe just saddle up to Bourbon and let them take care of making it.
