Brightest Young Things

Friday, June 5th, is National Doughnut Day which means free doughnuts at multiple locations around town. Washingtonian has a great list of where to go for your sugar fix here. Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts and The Fractured Prune are all participating.

For some background on this fine holiday I checked out the most accurate and reliable place on the internets, Wikipedia, then I shortened it:

  • National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" of WWI  who served doughnuts to soldiers behind the front lines in France. A legend has spread that the provision of doughnuts to US enlisted men in WWI is the origin of the term doughboy to describe US infantry, but the term was in use as early as the Mexican-American War of 1846-47.

And then there is the joy that is Homer Simpson in Donut Hell:

Happy National Doughnut Day!
