Brightest Young Things

14th and P is slowly turning itself into quite a foodie destination. The latest addition, Pitango Gelato. This small Baltimore-based business is comprised of a popular Fells Point shop, a wholesale operation and soon locations in DC and Reston.

They focus on what they call "extreme ingredients," making sure everything is the best quality possible. All their dairy ingredients come from Spring Wood Organic farm, run by a Roman and Lucy Stoltzfoos and their 11 kids. This family of Mennonites produces for Restaurant Nora and the 2008 James Beard Award Dinner. The products are all brought to the store, then the gelato is made in-house in small batches. Details on all their ingredients can be found here.

But it's not just gelato. Pitango will be serving espresso drinks starting at 8 a.m. The coffee comes from Zeke's in Baltimore, the machine is by Faema. Expect to see pastries joining the menu at some point. While I can't wait to try the gelato, I'm really excited for milkshakes.

You can check out their gelato flavors here. I think the Creme Fraiche made with probiotic cultured cream sounds amazing. But I also eat Activia, so take that for what it is.

Pitango is hoping to open before this weekend, so keep an eye out. Many thanks to my dear (and quite lovely) collaborator on this.

God loves a cheerful giver.

Kenny, all of the sorbets are dairy free.

Yeah, the sorbets are dairy free, but that doesn't make them necessarily vegan... I mean, how about that Kung Pao chicken sorbet? Knoaaawmeeeean.
