FOOD Gifting

BACON
That’s what was in my inbox this afternoon. A wonderful e-mail about a monthly bacon club (courtesy of Loulies.com), graciously followed by “We should do a FOOD GIFT GUIDE!” (Yes, Svetlana does type like she speaks). So, off to the interweb I went, seqrching for some new ideas and some old favorties. Remember, two day shipping is still available at most places, or you can always use the late gift coverup line “It should have been there by now!”. Read, drool over the pictures, shop and enjoy.

Cowgirl Creamery was started in Northern California by two DC natives. About two years ago they opened their ONLY east coast store right here in the Penn Quarter. Their cheeses are amazing to say the least, and as well as selling their own product, they also carry many artisan cheeses from the US and around the world.

Located just north of NYC, Zachys is one of the East Coast’s largest distributors of fine wine. They also hold auctions and tastings thought the year. Why hassle with going to the store when you can have it arrive at your doorstep? They have gift sets ranging from $90 - $800 (hey! big spender). They also sell single bottles and offer great prices on case purchases. If you’re really the wine-o and do your research, this store is one of the few I’ve seen that gives reasonable prices on futures as well.

Hey y’all! This Paula Dean endorsed Ham company is one of the nations most popular holiday selections. Being one of the few American foods to obtain a proprietary name (ie, your ass will get sued for calling a ham Smithfield unless you raised the pig in that county) their hams stand up to any other around. On this site you’ll find more than just ham, they also offer turkey, steaks, smoked salmon and sweet potato pie. When it comes to holiday hams, it’s either this or Honeybaked in my book. So go ahead, eat a slice of Southern Virginia and squeal like a pig, boy.

They call him Mr. Chocolate for a reason. Jacques Torres resume includes such notable positions as Corporate Pastry Chef for Ritz-Carlton, Pastry Chef of Le Cirque & Le Cirque 2000 and Dean of Pastry Studies at New York’s French Culinary Institute. Hundreds of pastry disciples flock to his flagship store in Brooklyn every year, but if you can’t make it up there, you can always order one of the many delicious gift sets he offers online. I’ve actually sent one of these out already this year, and I have to say that these chocolates bend Godiva over and do you know what to it.

Should I even go into detail here? You can get just about anything to satisfy your food gift needs here.

While this gift idea is certainly not for any supporter of PETA, this site offers a variety of Foie Gras and Duck products. There are only two Foie Gras farms in the entire US (Sonoma being the other, which sadly will soon be forced to close due to the Governator), so why not get it straight from the source? Everything here is reasonably priced and tastes really, really, really good. I’ve always wished to find an A-Grade lobe of foie under my tree on Christmas morning (hint).

Finally, for that person you have to get a gift for, but don’t really want to, get them this. Hopefully they’ll get the message.”
