DC Food News Round-Up!

DC Food News Round-Up!

July 9, 2008 by Alex Nicholson Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

After our last week’s plea for food writers we have not 1 but 2 new ones. And as serendipity would have it…Both are named Alex. But Alex Clifford is a boy. And Alex Nicholson, who will be writing a weekly “DC food news” post on Wednesdays (fingers and toes crossed) is a girl! A little something for everyone. I am so excited I could burst. Watch us slowly turn into a food blog

  • Check out these mussels!First and foremost, we must recognize the Throwdown issue. If you didn’t see it, Chef Teddy Folkman from H Street’s Granville Moore’s bested Bobby Flay in a throwdown of moules frites. Flay frankly never had a chance against such a local favorite, especially when he insists on using chiles as aggressively as he does in each dish. It’s never a real blind taste test is it?

While the audience was chockfull of recognizable faces and local food bloggers like Mike and Elizabeth Bober of Capital Spice. Huge props must be extended to Jason Storch of DCFoodies and Amy Storch of Amalah.com. Amy offers a great write-up into what it was like being a Throwdown judge. A 10-week pregnant judge who was told of her duties 10 minutes after Bobby Flay arrived at the Argonaut

Congratulations to everyone involved in the show, the Granville Moore’s and Argonaut staff and Chef Teddy Folkman! Granville Moore’s continues to pump out amazing food and you can only expect the lines for a table will get longer with this accomplishment under their helm.

  • Don’t want to wait at Lauriol?
We all have our favorite patios in town. Some come with longer waits than others, some you go to for the food and others you go to for the drinks. Washingtonian has a list of four new patios that have just opened up for the summer. West End Bistro on M and 22rd is now offering their French fare outdoors, while Hudson down the street will evoke a beachier feel with steel drums and rum drinks on Fridays. Brasserie Beck has taken advantage of their massive sidewalk property to create an outdoor bar and seating area and The Source has an intimate 2nd floor balcony that you’ll be likely to find me eating lacquered duck on.
  • Really? Frozen Yogurt Wars in D.C.?Apparently a new frozen yogurt place named Iceberry is opening in Georgetown. Iceberry already has locations in Reston Town Center, Chantilly and Springfield. I’ve seen the store on Reston and felt a bit like I was in front of a less-cool Pinkberry in L.A. so I kept walking. But realize I’ve never been in a Pinkberry and I’m clearly the least qualified person to make that statement.

Iceberry joins a whole slew of new yogurt places in DC. Sweet Green has already developed a nice following and made great use of a quirky space. Recent additions to the fro-yo wars are Tangy Sweet on P Street and the Styx-referencing Mr. Yogato on 17th Street.

It’s times like this that I wonder what happened to Frusen Glädjé.

  • Think they’ll have the red velvet rope at night? In a space that has certainly been speculated on and become a contentious symbol of 14th Street gentrification, the City Paper reports that The Diner and Tryst are coming to the former Church of the Rapture at 14th and T.

While it seems the move might have it’s challenges, it would be a huge boon to the neighborhood and to the stomachs of late night crowds.

Alex Clifford Says:

Nice round-up, Alex! I’ve been thinking of doing a walking battleground tour of the Dupont yogurt warzone (Yogato vs TangySweet)… lemme know if you want in.

Alex Nicholson Says:

Totally… and once Hello Cupcake opens I want to do a taste test vs. Georgetown Cupcake.

My only fear is walking around singing domo origato Mr. Yogato for days and days.

Nicole Says:

Yeah Alex Squared. Back up off our cupcakes. jk.

Anyhow. I would say to expect that FULL FULL FULL (as in Amanda and I are probably going to take time off work for this) around the first week of August when Hello Cupcake actually opens. w00p w00p.

Michael Says:

I think you girls should do a cupcake bake-off at the same time the men (Eddie and I) do our Great Steak Make Off.

You can be like the WNBA.

hans Says:

oh, and bakeshopdc.com. his cupcakes are awesome.. and he delivers! where could you go wrong??

July 10, 2008 at 10:46 am
Nicole Says:

Somehow I think more people would watch a cupcake bake-off than a WNBA game…

July 10, 2008 at 10:52 am
Nicole Says:

hans - trust me, we’re hitting them ALL. hence why we are taking a day off work. and also probably investing in some pants with an elastic wasteband.

July 10, 2008 at 11:17 am
Amanda Says:

Nicole, agreed.

Michael: this bake off will be a separate event from the cup-cake tour. and you need to email me when your house would be available to do a bake off/steak off, so that you boys and us women can arrange a time for this. i will need some notice so i have time to perfect my cupcake skillzz.
