Man, I have a tough job. In this new feature, I am to fearlessly trek across DC, tasting, testing, watching, waiting, and generally, well, spying on, bars and restaurants so that only the bestest pass your beautiful BYT lips.
First up: champagne.
Perfectly fitting, huh? Why not celebrate my new job? I’m worth it! But anyway, back to reality. We all know that champagne 1) can really vary in price, and 2) really vary in taste. Oh, wait, you don’t know that? You don’t even know that much about champagne? Well, go here. I promise I won’t mock you if you do.
Knowledge is sexy, luv, so, click click click away.
Back? Okay.

Here’s what went down: 5 restaurants, each in its own neighborhood.
Who’s the best? Honestly, each has their own charm, and most charge about the same per glass (about 12 dollars). But the difference is in how it’s served. Champagne is kinda like high-maintenance soda: it should be chilled, a bit sweet, have bubbles, and enough taste to make you want more — think ice-cold Coke on a hot day. With that, my personal faves are L’Enfant and the Georgetown joint mentioned below. Here, my drinks were just the right temp and had just enough bubbles. This is tres important, folks, because, friends don’t let friends drink warm, flat champagne… and good bartenders don’t either!
And with that nugget o’ knowledge, I shall part.
Until next time, cheers!

um, neither cava nor Prosecco fit into the “Champagne” theme. You should have said “First up: sparkling wine”
November 15, 2007 at 2:12 pmtry bistro du coin. they have some lovely cheap house champers.
and, sorry, michael m, but excitement over finding delirium tremens on tap? is this a post from 1995? you might want to try bierra paradiso when thor is there and ask for a quick run through of all the great beers you’ve been missing. frankly, the beer selection at l’enfant is embarassing, especially as a piss-poor replacement for adams morgan’s sadly-missed chez antoine from a few years back.
November 15, 2007 at 2:16 pmand, the last time i was there (which, granted, was probably 9 months ago or more) the house champagne at bistro du coin was $7. and it is yummy.
while you are there, get the french onion soup and the mussels in that garlicy-creamy-buttery sauce. oh my.
