A Drink A Day: Sangaree

A Drink A Day: Sangaree

December 18, 2009 by Danielle

So, you want an older cocktail? Try this one – it’s been around since at least 1774 and is the precursor to sangria. Dr. Cocktail from Imbibe tells the whole story behind this old soul and I recommend the read if you have a moment. Below I’ve posted the standard Sangaree cocktail, but this one has dozens of variations. What can you expect? It’s been around longer than the formal US government.

Sangaree

  • 4 oz Ruby Port
  • 1 tsp confectioners sugar
  • dash of nutmeg

Shake well with ice and pour, unstrained, into an old fashioned glass. Toss in a couple lemon wheels and top with a dash of nutmeg. As I mentioned there are dozens of variations  with bourbon, whiskey, scotch, Sauternes, stout, gin…you name it, it’s been made into a special Sangaree.
