Brightest Young Things

I was absolutely giddy at the thought of today's cocktail. I love sloe gin and love finding different ways to drink it beyond the Fizz. Meehoulong is also sometimes called "Meehouland" in cocktail guides, (so be on the lookout for that) and allegedly means "Fire Eating Devil" in Chinese. Whether or not that's true I don't know, but I do know I like this drink.

Meehoulong (Fire Eating Devil) Cocktail

  • 1 1/2 oz sloe gin
  • 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 oz dry vermouth
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • Lemon twist

Stir in mixing glass with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. The taste is a little all over the place to me, but in a good way (unlike yesterday's drink). It reminds me of a candy that's sweet and sour but with a bitter finish instead of a sugary sweet one. A hint of citrus gives it a lovely smell and the sloe gin goes nicely with the vermouths. The name is a little misleading as there is no fire involved but it's a keeper nonetheless.

God loves a cheerful giver.
