Last week was like a cruel joke. I was away on business travel and my hotel happened to be painfully close to several great wine bars, and I had a cold. One of those colds that keeps you tethered to cold medicine and therefore unable to have even one sip of alcohol for fear of permanently damaging your liver.
And then it hit me. Last week was the longest I'd gone without having a drop of anything alcoholic since I started this column in January. I didn't get the DTs or anything but I felt out of sorts...like I was missing an old friend. This weekend was the first time I'd had a drink in a solid week. All is right with the world.

La Pirouette
- 1 1/4 oz sherry
- 1 1/4 oz dry vermouth
- 1 dash orange bitters
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
Stir in a mixing glass with ice and strain. Add a lemon twist for decor as well as functionality (it's pretty and prevents scurvy). This is something I like to order at hotels or fancy wedding with open bars because of its golden color, light sweet taste, and the fact that I generally don't have sherry on hand with any regularity. I would also suggest this in lieu (or in addition to, rather) your standard Champagne cocktails this New Year's Eve.
God loves a cheerful giver.
