Brightest Young Things

Big thanks to Michael for covering this column for me yesterday while I was out of town. As soon as I got off the Bolt Bus yesterday I threw my bags in a corner, ordered Chinese food, and cracked open the Bourbon.

For the record Bourbon and Chinese food don't really go hand-in-hand, but no matter. This is simple and generally contains what I have on hand at any given moment when I leave town and don't go grocery shopping for a few days: the last dregs of some fruit juice and liquor.

Broken Leg

  • 1 oz Bourbon
  • 2 oz hot apple juice (not cider)
  • raisins, cinnamon stick, lemon wedge (some, all, or none: your call)

In a highball glass pour Bourbon and hot apple juice. Throw in some garnishes: this one calls for raisins, a cinnamon stick, a lemon wedge. Your pick. Make it a fruit salad if you want. I got a little bored after a while and I used hot spiced chai in lieu of the apple juice, mixed with 1.5 oz of Bourbon, a spoonful of brown sugar and a splash of lemon juice. Both are great after a long day of uncomfortable bus seats and the boredom of traveling on I-95.

God loves a cheerful giver.
