Washington Social Christmas Preview
December 10, 2007 by Marty Soshel
Send to a Friend
For those of you who don’t know Ms. Taylor Thompson, she’s the muscle behind Washington Social Christmas – the girl in charge of getting it all together and getting you there. She’s also a kick-ass publicist by day and general source of merriment by night.
Taylor talked to some of the bands involved in the Christmas rock ‘n roll craziness (at the 9:30 Club on December 15!) about their holiday wishes.
From electric toothbrushes to naming the stars to giving vs. receiving, add some happiness to your holidays! First up:
The Dance Party

(what the fuck is that? -ed)
The Dance Party have had a smashing 2007. Their first full album was released to cheers, happy reviews and wet panties world-wide. And when they take the stage next Saturday it will be their FIFTH performance at the 9:30 Club this year. As D.C. well knows by now, everything is more fun with a little DP in your life.
BYT: You guys are one of those (very) rare and refreshing bands who are friends first, band mates second. What does The Dance Party get each other for Christmas? And how do you celebrate together - carols around a Christmas fire, decorating a tree, emptying a few bottles under the highway?
Danny Hoagg (bass): Last year I bought the band electric toothbrushes. Then we proceeded to get drunk in our practice space and talk about getting awesome.
Kevin Bayly (guitar): Last Christmas I brought a six-pack of Zima to practice. Mick drank three and started crying. It was beautiful. Believe it or not, Danny’s nickname in the band is actually “Father Christmas.”
Mick Coogan (vocals, guitar): Four words: strip club gift cards.

Washington Social Club

Marty, age 5
The reason we’re all here, folks. Their second album, Bigger Than Your Boyfriend, was released in June. Since then it’s been featured on Entourage, Gossip Girl and soon to be on prime-time shows on NBC and ABC. It’s beautiful, it’s brilliant, it’s bigger than your boyfriend (but not mine, obviously).
BYT: Which is better - giving or receiving?
Martin Royle (vocals): Usually I’d say GIVING because I’m a dominant, forceful top by nature. But lately I’ve been having fantasies about RECEIVING, maybe from someone older, a little more mature and experienced. Anyway, if someone out there fits that criteria, email me at KBAYLY@gmail.com.
BYT: What’s your worst holiday memory?
Martin: Oh, that’s easy. I worked retail one Christmas at a fancyish store in Pennsylvania. I have never loathed the human condition, both my own and my customers, more than I did in the week between Christmas and New Years.
What was the best thing about 2007 for you?
Randy Scope (drums): The birth of my daughter Amelia Marie was the best thing about 2007.

Jukebox the Ghost

Wow, D.C. music gets better and better and better. The proof in the pudding? Jukebox the Ghost! If you’ve yet to catch one of their masterfully skillful and wonderfully energetic performances, you’re missing a joy comparable to waking up on Christmas morning and finding that Santa ate your cookies and left whatever your five-year-old heart desired most. Pure joy and amazement. Welcome, Jukebox the Ghost!
BYT: Pick a Christmas album – Mannheim Steamroller or A Chipmunk Christmas?
Ben Thornewill (vocals, piano): Chipmunks Christmas, but it has to be the old one and not the new one.
BYT: There’s a new one?
Ben: Yeah, it’s not out yet, but we got an advance copy from a music publisher. It’s god-awful. It has the Chipmunks doing hip-hop like (rapping in low, very un-Chipmunk like voice) “Party like a Chipmunk! Party like a Chipmunk!” AWFUL.
BYT: That’s embarrassing. Okay, what’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone and the worst gift?
Ben: Worst gift was the Rock n Roll Hamster. I bought at Spencer’s gifts for my aunt, who is actually much cooler than that. She left it at my house in the guest room and I found it nine months later.
The best gift I gave was…okay, you know how you can buy a star online?
(At which point I hear the other members of Jukebox the Ghost complaining loudly in the background. Something is said about “sponsoring a whale,” expletives, etc)
BYT: Yeah, I know about that.
Ben: Okay, I named a star online for my best friend.
BYT: For your best friend? Not for a girlfriend?
Ben: No, not a girlfriend. It was right before we both went to college. And in the summer we used to watch the stars together.
BYT: Wow. (sound of hearts sighing collectively everywhere…)

Laura Burhenn

Jumping up-and-down in my office, running in place and squealing with glee – that’s what I did when I got the email saying that Laura was available for Washington Social Christmas. She’s the front-woman for the delightful Georgie James, whose first album Places is raising people’s spirits in far corners of the world and right here at home. Laura also does beautiful solo shows that linger with you days after the entry stamp fades from your hand. She’s a living, breathing argument against that tired charge that D.C. has no style and she’s downright beautiful to boot. Given all this, I’d still buy all her albums and go to all her shows if Laura was a raging bitch / maniacal diva – but, no, she’s the sweetest, kindest, coolest of girls. And WE COULD NOT BE MORE THRILLED that she’s joining us on December 15.
(check out Laura’s BYT column here)
BYT: I think you’re D.C.’s most crush-worthy musician. A lot of the boys and a number of girls out there would like to know: what’s your favorite way to keep warm in the winter?
Laura: There’s nothing better than heading out into a snowscape, getting so cold you think you might lose some fingers or toes, and then cozying up by a fire with some hot chocolate (or a bottle of red wine) and someone near and dear. Keeping warm should be an interactive experience.
BYT: What’s the best present you’ve ever received for Christmas? Worst present?
Laura: The commercialization that fuels the holidays is a terrible thing. All the emphasis on physical stuff — defining us and somehow demonstrating how much we care for the people in our lives. “You wanna know how much I love you? I love you a [Wii, scarf, diamond, DVD, new car]’s worth!” The best gifts are always the homemade ones. And just time spent together.
BYT: Okay, kids, you heard her – let’s spend some time together. What are you doing next Saturday night?
Washington Social Christmas

Wouldn’t miss it! Awesome line-up!
December 10, 2007 at 11:26 amu people don’t do things halfway that’s for sure. sounds like a fun evening.
December 10, 2007 at 11:55 amTaylor never does anything half way…….for further proof of this, stay tuned for our next feature on BYT. you’ll know it when you see it.
December 10, 2007 at 12:19 pmthis will serve as a good demo on the state of DC music…and its not good.
December 10, 2007 at 12:45 pmMike - I’m curious to know what you consider good music? WSC, TDP and Caverns are three of my personal favorites so I happen to think the state of DC’s music is really good right now (if not better then a couple years ago at least).
Can you name any bands in DC you DO like or is it completely dead to you?
I’m not busting on ya’ - just sincerely curious.
December 10, 2007 at 2:13 pmMike only likes Tom Petty.
December 10, 2007 at 2:41 pmbig fan of canyon before they broke up. …and im still a fan of brandon bultlers solo stuff.
justin jones is pretty good….
other than that im not “feelin” anything coming out of DC at the moment..
December 10, 2007 at 2:58 pmMike - maybe you can leave a nice comment on our Justin Jones listening party: http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/listening-party-justin-jones-the-driving-rain/
December 10, 2007 at 3:03 pmOkay, so Mike doens’t really like pop/rock at all which is why he wouldn’t like WSC or TDP - who are, like em or not, the biggest bands round here. Faux country, strummy stuff is not indicative of the D.C. scene at present. (and thank moses, in my opinion).
December 10, 2007 at 3:10 pmI think that this show is going to be radical to the max. I would prefer that Mike “feels” his way into a dark cave with little to no food or water and a flashlight that’s on its last leg.
Michael M., I commend you sir.
December 10, 2007 at 3:19 pmi am a fan of some “pop/rock” bands just not these two.
December 10, 2007 at 3:23 pmI like Telograph
Oh, and Death by Sexy (not really. Just kidding, really (not really). Really.
December 10, 2007 at 3:27 pmOh, and while I like some aspects of WSC and TDP, I don’t think they come off well at the 9:30 club at all, but then again few bands do. IMO it’s too large a venue for them.
Much better suited for the Black Cat, but well, there are those troubles…
December 10, 2007 at 3:30 pmjust for the record, and i’m in said WSC, justin jones and the driving rain are a damn good band.
December 10, 2007 at 3:31 pmCan we all be happy and festive in the spirit of the season? How about less comments on who we don’t like…and more comments on the oh-so-DIY-ness of that Dance Party photograph. :)
Or maybe on the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie (it’s true - I heard it from Ben Thornewill and then saw the movie preview on TV yesterday) - check it:
http://www.thechipmunks.com/
every time I see the TDP header I remember Jeff walking into the “ugly xmas sweater” party this past weekend and the next 20 seconds that went something like this:
Svetlana: Jeff’s sweater is quite inspirational
Mick: We call him “the quiet storm”.
Saturday will be amazing.
I may even wear my xmas smock again. The world needs more DIY foam antlers and candy canes on clothing.
“ugly xmas sweater” party? That wasn’t in the upcoming events section.
December 10, 2007 at 4:14 pmI remember a lot of pictures being taken sat night, where are they?
December 10, 2007 at 4:19 pm“ugly xmas sweater” parties are so 4 years ago. you ugys are the worst. hipsters. ever.
December 10, 2007 at 4:26 pmOh, Mike - you make me sad. It was a very fun party! With some unforgettable sweaters (and I loved the food too - so many parties these days don’t have enough food!) Well done! I’m just sad I didn’t get to take Henry home…
December 10, 2007 at 4:36 pmbest part of the party was that killer ghetto blaster and scratched CD’s
December 10, 2007 at 4:48 pmQuit rubbing it in, hipsters. You’re making those of us left off the invite list have low self-esteem.
December 10, 2007 at 4:49 pmI swear there were like 400 people on the god damn invite Michael. Guess you didn’t make the cut.
December 10, 2007 at 5:00 pmBYT is off my e-mail list for the next summer party.
December 10, 2007 at 5:51 pmSvetlana’s DIY jumper was genius. My sweater made me look like a reject from Studio 54, but I loved it anyway, consequently it weighed 20 lbs. I shed it for the scratch-tastic dance party, however (an actual dance party), that mostly involved Michael Jackson and almost made me wee my tights with joy. There were a ton of (potentially embarrassing) photos. I wouldn’t mind seeing them as well. I’m also putting my vote in for Jeff as the winner of the ugly “holiday” sweater contest.
Oh and can’t wait for Saturday and more floor-rocking dance moves.
December 10, 2007 at 5:52 pmSvetlana, I had no idea you made that jumper yourself! Crafty, indeed…
December 10, 2007 at 7:13 pmI don’t know much about Martin Royle, or enough about WSC apparently, but I do get that Mr. Royle has a pretty good sense of humor. Nice preview.
December 11, 2007 at 5:27 pmThank you, EC! Glad you enjoyed it. Marty is a laugh riot indeed. Hope to see you on Saturday night!
December 11, 2007 at 5:42 pmI added every motherfucker in this city to that evite list. If you didn’t recieve the email, blame evite, not me. Half the people didn’t respond. That being said, I think there were about 130 people there. If anyone has pictures, please send to jetton999@yahoo.com
December 13, 2007 at 6:49 pm

Pardon my French, but FUCK YEAH I’ll be there! Been looking forward to this for a while!
