Thanksgiving Playlist. Just for You.

November 25, 2009 by Svetlana

Last year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Cale and I DJed a BYT pre-turkey food drive bonanzaroo at Jimmy Valentine’s. This year, Cale decided to ditch me (kidding!), and is DJing The WTF Thankgiving at TOWN with all our best gay friends. You should go, it will be A GREAT GREAT TIME.
Any which way, last year he made this awesome playlist to get everyone into the mood of giving thanks and we’re rerunning it now.

Let us know what you think and suggest more songs to add to it:

And since imeem doesn’t always play the full songs anymore, here are the 30 second ones in their full glory on divshare:

Download em here.

Thank You For Talkin’ To Me Africa – Sly & The Family Stone
After almost two years of inactivity since the single Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again), Sly hit back hard with There’s A Riot Goin’ On (a response to Gaye “What’s Goin On”). The final track is an extended dub version of Thank You, with the drugs wearing off, and the 60’s coming to an end it influenced everyone from Miles Davis to George Clinton to a new generation of hip hop artists. Epic.

Thank You for Sending Me an Angel (Country Angel Version) – Talking Heads
An abandoned b-side, unreleased until 2005’s expanded editions. Sure the original is better, but this is interesting nonetheless.

Thank You Caroline (Andy Votel Remix) - The Avalanches
God damn where is that second album. No way it can live up to the hype. This is a b-side from the (excellent) Since I Left You single.

Thank You Girl – The Beatles
Originally intended to be a single, Lennon didn’t think it was good enough so it ended up as the b-side to From Me To You. I still think it’s single-worthy.

Thanks For the Pepperoni – George Harrison
Whatever, I love the third jam disc to Harrison’s opus.

Thanks A Lot – Johnny Cash
Everyone has this idea of Cash as this somber bad ass, yet all his songs are hilarious.

Be Thankful For What You Got – Massive Attack
Overrated. There, I said it.

Thank God It’s Friday – Love And Kisses
Another amazing Casablanca records studio band, this is the full 12″ version of the title track from the movie soundtrack, which also contained Donna Summer’s Academy Award winning Last Dance. Starts off sick and doesn’t let up for 8 min.

Wham Bam Thank You Ma’am – Charles Mingus
Charles doesn’t even play bass on this track, he takes piano and vocal duties, and it’s still one of his best songs. Whacked out, sloppy and beautiful. One time I got in trouble at work for saying “wham bam thank you ma’am” during a meeting.  No joke.

Thankyoubranch – The Books
I keep running into people that have never heard of this band and don’t own their 2002 masterpiece Thought For Food. Get on it! They totally pull it off live too.

Thank You Baby – The Shirelles
Arguably the definitive girl group of the 60’s. They have an endless number of excellent single, this one from 1964.

Thank You My Love – Imagination
No, thank you Imagination. Thank fucking you.

BONUS: here are some new songs for 2009!

Be Thankful You’re You – Fern Jones
The Numero Group is this amazing record label that unearths lost gems. You should own every one. Their 5th release was a forgotten gospel rockabilly album from 1959.

Thank You Jack White (For The Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me) – Flaming Lips
A very funny (and lucid) tale from the Flaming Lips played on the Yoshimi tour and released as a b-side to Fight Test.

Double Bonus: this awesome illustration Erik did of us in a can last year. Erik is a genius.

I just want to make it clear that this spinny turkey thing is the first thing I saw when I opened my laptop and it triggered an immediate dash to throw up.

Y’all need a NOT SAFE FOR HANGOVER tag.

The good version of “Be Thankful For What You Got” is the original by William DeVaughn.
This Massive Attack version kinda blows.
