Lost On Arrival: A Cut Copy Interview

May 19, 2008 by Cale Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

So this interview with Cut Copy’s guitar, bass, backing vocals, sampler man Tim Hoey came in a little late. But with sold out shows every night and killing it at the best after party DC has ever seen, we’ll cut him a little slack. Plus he’s adorable. So pretend like it’s Wednesday and relive the magic all over again.

Brightest Young Things: How does it feel to put out the best god damn record of 2008 so far?

Tim Hoey: It’s great that you think that! It’s always hard to remain objective about something you’ve lived with for so long. We were really proud of the record after we finished it. We felt like we pushed ourselves in terms of song writing and we’re glad that people have really responded well. We want to push the next one even further.

BYT: What’s your pick for 2nd best?

TH: Maybe too early to tell yet but so far I’ve liked the Sebastien Tellier and Ravonettes record.

BYT: Are you famous in Melbourne? Like do you get recognized on the street? Cause I mean, I’ve loved you guys since the beginning but I wouldn’t know it if I was sitting next to you at the pub or not. You know, drinking Fosters. (sorry)

TH: Ah not really. I think the music is more important and tells everyone what they want to know…who cares about what we look like really… Although Mitchell cuts a striking figure.

BYT: Word on the street is you guys are DJing the official after party with myself and Will Eastman after the Washington DC show. (shameless plug) If that rumor is true what can we expect to hear?

TH: You’ll be hearing a whole bunch of good times. Some old some new…some unreleased Cuy Copy stuff.

BYT: Do you have DJ names? If not, make one up right now.

TH: We usually just go under Cut Copy dj’s but for the purposes of this interview you can refer to us as Iceman and Condor.

BYT: Give us a short inspirational message for us to deliver to the kids of DC to get the excited to come to the show and after party. Feel free to exaggerate about how amazing it’s going to be with promises of free unicorn rides or whatever, doesn’t matter. Start with “Dear vibrant youth of DC…”

Condor: Dear vibrant youth of DC, listen to Sonic Youth. There is better advice in those records than i could ever give.

Favorite Crocodile Dundee movie?
a) Crocodile Dundee
b) Crocodile Dundee II
c) Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles

d)Mad Max

BYT: What was the best and worst show you’ve ever played?

C: Best - Madison Square Garden. Worst - Mum’s 50th

BYT: When you hit the 2 min mark of Lights & Music does it feel awesome every time?

C: Sure. Why not right? Especially to a full house.

BYT: Have you ever heard the song Music & Lights by early 80’s disco superstars Imagination? It goes like this:
Let me show you all the glamour and the gold
Secret fantasies in a show biz world.
Music and lights - I’ll sing and dance for you all night
Sequins and pearls and lots of pretty girls

C: That’s exactly where we got the idea for Lights and Music! Nice train spotting!

BYT: One of our other writer’s just interviewed Black Kids. What is one question they should have asked but probably didn’t?

C: Did Dawn really throw up on the bus?

BYT: Boring generic indie music interview question that I’m actually interested in hearing the answer to: How was it working with Tim Goldsworthy?

C: Working with Tim was everything hoped it would be and more.

BYT: What did he bring to the new record?

C: He was our muse in the studio and never an imposing force. It was more like a collaboration than producer and band type of scenario. We certainly learnt a lot from working with Tim that we’ll apply to the next record.

BYT: Did you get to hang out with James Murphy at all?

C: James dropped in from time to time, but he was out on tour with LCD.

BYT: Was he a dick? I think it’s ok if he was, I mean, he’s so cool he’s allowed to be a dick, right?

C: We’ve met James a bunch of times over the years and he is one of the sweetest persons we’ve met. Total gentleman and always up for a chat.

BYT: Finally, we do this thing where we get interviewees to pick one song for my mom to review. She’s old and goes to church a lot and doesn’t like movies with too many bad words and listens to top 40 country music and has knee problems, so choose one from the new album that you think she’ll like.

C: Maybe try feel the love. Its a very life affirming song. It’s my mums favourite song on the record also.

Mom: Hey….actually liked it….the beat, the music, the melody, and the vocals. Love you, Mom

Me: That’s all u have to say?

Mom: I just liked it…..give me some hints on how to elaborate!

Me: Nevermind, going to bed!
