The Fridge DC . 516 8th St SE, Rear Alley . Washington, DC 20003
At Bastani & Branding on Saturday, November 14, 6-9pm, exhibiting artist Pooneh Maghazehe will demonstrate the process of creating her It’s What’s for Dinner series, of which the works feature raw meat branded with an Islamic pattern used in architectural detailing throughout Iran. Maghazehe’s event will feature participants in custom-made garments branding meat and tortillas, grilling them, and offering them for consumption to the audience. This is a unique opportunity for attendees to view and participate in art-making, and attendees will be treated to bastani (Persian ice cream). This event is free, but the first twenty attendees to donate $5 towards the project will receive merchandise from Persianesque Magazine.
Maghazehe says of the event: “In performance that teeters between private ceremony and public spectacle, witness a conglomeration of signs and symbols that create metaphor for the dynamic on which concepts of social order and power rest… This work investigates the viewer’s role or participation in the completion of work of art and, weaves into a personal biography that parallels a subversive take on symbols of authoritative nationalist and capitalist ideology.”
