These Californians have more in common with the dirty haired, dirty fingernailed folk groups of the nascent years than they do any of their contemporaries. They’re suited for reminiscent hopefulness and the gracefully youthful fusion of hostility and all-encompassing passion for all things that can set a smile ablaze or turn the hairs on arms and backs of necks into little beds of nails at the flick of a switch.
The Willowz
Garage-rock bands love reverb – it really gives the music that sense of actually being recorded in a garage, y’see – and the Willowz are no different. The entirety of their latest album, “Everyone,” rings with sounds that might as well be bouncing off concrete floors and vinyl walls.
However, “Everyone” also bounces a lot of tunefulness off a listener’s ears. Frontman Richie James Follin is a ragged singer, but he’s just as smartly soulful as the White Stripes’ Jack White or the Black Lips’ Jared Swilley, and he might just have the edge on both of them as a scrapper.
