This is BEYOND, a weekly downtempo happy hour run by Adrian (The
Hosiery) and Ivan & Dan (Freeform DJ Collective). We have a web site,
www.furtherapart.com, and a clutch press release:
Beyond is a happy hour event held every Wednesday night from
6PM to 11PM in the Upstairs lounge above Skewers and Café Luna restaurants at
1633 P St NW (at the corner of 17th St and P St).
The event features
local and national DJs from all over the east coast playing a wide
variety of music as well as drink specials and Moroccan tapas.
Music is the key to the event’s existence and DJs spin everything from
dubstep to downtempo, underground hip-hop, indie rock, and reggae.
The event serves as an outlet for DJs to play music seldom heard in
DC, and thus fosters a spirit of creativity and inclusiveness. Since
its start in May 2007, a number of nationally recognized DJs have
played at Beyond, coming from as far away as New York City. The weekly
guest DJs are joined by residents Dan Amitai, Ivan Khilko and Adrian
Parsons.
The event is held in a beautifully decorated lounge reminiscent of
North Africa, a short walk away from both the U St-Cardozo and the
Dupont Circle Metro stations. Beyond features $2 beers, $3
Pomegranate Martinis and $4 Ketel One martinis until 8PM, with drink
prices going up by just a dollar after that. There is also a special
$2 tapas menu from Skewers all night long, as well as that
restaurant’s full menu; extensive vegetarian options are available.
Well, I stopped in twice yesterday. Both times is was full ‘beyond’ capacity, no sitting room, barely standing room. And the staff made absolutley no attempt at accomodation - there is no waiting list or reservation option. You’re pretty much just left to stand there looking like a dumbass until you decide to leave and never come back. See ya.

I am sorry about your negative experience. Due to our recent surge in popularity we have been struggling to come up with ways to accommodate our guests. We are working with the owners to come up with some solutions. I am sorry that you won’t be coming back :(. For what it’s worth, looks like it is at full capacity until about 9pm, then dips. Again I sincerely apologize that you had a shitty time man, definitely not our intention…. If you would like to discuss further or if you have any suggestions for me, please feel free to email me, djamitai@gmail.com. I would love to talk to you. This goes for anyone reading this as well!
I had fun at this event before. It’s a great vibe, but yea, seating can sometimes be an issue. Dan’s personally allowed me to sit at his table when there was nothing left. Good people - good music - good drink specials.
February 13, 2008 at 10:34 amBeyond is always a good time. The food is almost as amazing as the drink prices!!! I’ve done a few gigs here and will continue in the future.
February 18, 2008 at 9:58 amThank you for the positive feedback guys! See you soon. We have some exciting DJs coming up this month. -Dan

ASCEND!
June 11, 2008 at 4:07 pmIf you see a girl on a date with a triangular lamp doing a crossword puzzle, you can always ask her to move so you can sit down with the lamp that she is so blatantly ignoring. She’ll move for you…unless you try to help with the crossword. All bets will be off.
June 16, 2008 at 6:51 pmWe got Bob, we got Will Eastman, and DJ Tall Bastard on the tip this evening. All of them are bright, young, and have things. Tunes so good, you’ll pee your pants. Be there.
bow bow
chicka chickaaa
June 25, 2008 at 2:33 pmI doubt I’d ever go to this as the music isn’t likely my thing, but maybe I would if it were ever advertised that there would be music that is my thing, but I do have a complaint:
Why in the hell do happy hours in DC start so f’ing late? I get off at 4:00. If I go all the way home then there’s no way I’m coming back to pay for drinks I could probably make better at my household bar (Aviation? Bronx Cocktail?). 6 pm is too late to start a Happy Hour. They really should start earlier to encourage people to leave work earlier or to stop off on their way home from work. If they start after people have time to get home, change, then head back out it completely defeats the purpose of happy hour.
My dos centavos.
June 25, 2008 at 2:58 pmHey Michael,
I’m totally with you on the late HH. Unfortunately, all three of us have 9-5ish jobs and getting to the spot in time to be ready to go by 4pm is unrealistic at this time. However, Cafe Luna (the restaurant beneath us) does happy hour starting at 4pm. They don’t have the beast tunes though :(.
p.s. DJ GRUN AND MC BLACK SATURN LIVE EXPERIMENTAL HIP-HOP, Boring Kitchen Sound System, and The Gentry DJ set on 7/2! :D :D
June 27, 2008 at 5:35 pmp.s. we got bumped on WAMU Wednesday morning, how rave is that? Am I right?
June 27, 2008 at 5:36 pmPersonally I think the downtempo scene is widely underappreciated in this city and I am all for supporting those that “get it”. Not to mention ya’ll have a happy hour that lasts more than an hour. It should be called Happy Hours. And many I have had at Beyond!
July 29, 2008 at 3:01 pmgot the xone 32!!! awesome.
August 13, 2008 at 1:05 pmBut this happy hour goes to 11!
