Beyond Downtempo Happy Hour is Back @ Upstairs Lounge

6:00 pm

Beyond is back! Starting January 7th, 2009, your weekly chillout spot is at 1633 P St, NW from 6:30 to 11pm (upstairs). If you are into the newest downtempo/electronica/house/techno/dubstep/breaks/hip hop/funk/soul/grooves, and you like to sip good beer under dim lights, roll through. Each week we’ll have three DJs/live acts providing the tunes, and we’re offering the absolute best prices on food and drink:

$2 bottles of Sam Adams, Blue Moon, Yuengling, Miller Lite (until 8pm, when they become $3)
$3 Martinis and $3 Shots
$2 Moroccan tapas

This is where the good people come to calm down in the middle of a rough week. We’ll also help you discover new artists and get a hold of your favorite jams. You can get a nice meal and a couple of drinks for ten bucks.

For 2009 we’ll have a website with mixes and show recordings, special events with live art installations, and other fun stuff (Guitar Hero playoffs, comedy, light shows).

For more information, booking info or just general life advice, contact Dave Bloom at bloomsounds@gmail.com.

See you thurr

A Says:

Well, I stopped in twice yesterday. Both times is was full ‘beyond’ capacity, no sitting room, barely standing room. And the staff made absolutley no attempt at accomodation - there is no waiting list or reservation option. You’re pretty much just left to stand there looking like a dumbass until you decide to leave and never come back. See ya.

Dan Amitai Says:

A,
I am sorry about your negative experience. Due to our recent surge in popularity we have been struggling to come up with ways to accommodate our guests. We are working with the owners to come up with some solutions. I am sorry that you won’t be coming back :(. For what it’s worth, looks like it is at full capacity until about 9pm, then dips. Again I sincerely apologize that you had a shitty time man, definitely not our intention…. If you would like to discuss further or if you have any suggestions for me, please feel free to email me, djamitai@gmail.com. I would love to talk to you. This goes for anyone reading this as well!

I had fun at this event before. It’s a great vibe, but yea, seating can sometimes be an issue. Dan’s personally allowed me to sit at his table when there was nothing left. Good people - good music - good drink specials.

Shane Tabaka (enahz) Says:

Beyond is always a good time. The food is almost as amazing as the drink prices!!! I’ve done a few gigs here and will continue in the future.

IS IT SO WRONG?

that I am very excited about my own event tonight, we have Rodrigo Salvatierra and Van Fleet doing the music thing and it’s also the second week of lovely sounds from our own brand new speakers.

PS - Rodrigo of Chile left us a creepy ecard, check that: http://www.acapela-group.com/Greetings/1-b91e855615700

If you see a girl on a date with a triangular lamp doing a crossword puzzle, you can always ask her to move so you can sit down with the lamp that she is so blatantly ignoring. She’ll move for you…unless you try to help with the crossword. All bets will be off.

We got Bob, we got Will Eastman, and DJ Tall Bastard on the tip this evening. All of them are bright, young, and have things. Tunes so good, you’ll pee your pants. Be there.

Michael Says:

I doubt I’d ever go to this as the music isn’t likely my thing, but maybe I would if it were ever advertised that there would be music that is my thing, but I do have a complaint:

Why in the hell do happy hours in DC start so f’ing late? I get off at 4:00. If I go all the way home then there’s no way I’m coming back to pay for drinks I could probably make better at my household bar (Aviation? Bronx Cocktail?). 6 pm is too late to start a Happy Hour. They really should start earlier to encourage people to leave work earlier or to stop off on their way home from work. If they start after people have time to get home, change, then head back out it completely defeats the purpose of happy hour.

My dos centavos.

Dan Amitai Says:

Hey Michael,
I’m totally with you on the late HH. Unfortunately, all three of us have 9-5ish jobs and getting to the spot in time to be ready to go by 4pm is unrealistic at this time. However, Cafe Luna (the restaurant beneath us) does happy hour starting at 4pm. They don’t have the beast tunes though :(.

p.s. DJ GRUN AND MC BLACK SATURN LIVE EXPERIMENTAL HIP-HOP, Boring Kitchen Sound System, and The Gentry DJ set on 7/2! :D :D

June 27, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Dan Amitai Says:

p.s. we got bumped on WAMU Wednesday morning, how rave is that? Am I right?

June 27, 2008 at 5:36 pm
powlah Says:

Personally I think the downtempo scene is widely underappreciated in this city and I am all for supporting those that “get it”. Not to mention ya’ll have a happy hour that lasts more than an hour. It should be called Happy Hours. And many I have had at Beyond!

It’s a hit or miss night. I’ve been there twice, once was good the other time was terrible. They should really keep good DJ’s comming if they are going to creat a following.

Thanks for your input!

This week (the 12th): bacon takeover.

November 10, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Dan Amitai Says:

I’ve come to the realization that ‘Beyond Downtempo’ sucks!! It was desperate attempt to get girls or guys drunk on a Wednesday night and then take them back to my apartment for unprotected sex. I apologize to everyone who spent $$ to listen to our subpar DJ’s spin.

November 12, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Sexy Fitsum Says:

@billy
there’s no need to put an apostrophe in djs. it’s plural, not possessive. btw, the happy hour is one of the best in DC. you must be a complete fucking idiot from hell.

November 12, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Dan Amitai Says:

The event features my cousin lou ‘two left hands’ benson spinning a variety of top 40 hits as well as drink specials and Moroccan tapas.

November 12, 2008 at 5:45 pm
billy Says:

@Sexy Fitsum

Thanks for correcting my grammar you douche bag!!! You should spend more time getting better djs @ this event. faggot!!

November 12, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Sexy Fitsum Says:

“whoever thought having a bunch of subpar dj’s congregate every wednesday (clue:would be a good idea) needs to be shot.”

who ever writes like Billy — nevermind calling himself Billy like some southern-fried perpetual jailhouse rape victim — should be neutered.

November 12, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Dan Amitai Says:

hey everyone, _real_ Dan here. :) Unfortunately Lou Benson is not really a Beyond resident, nor do I take drunk girls to my apartment because I moved all the way to Silver Spring on Saturday and no girl in her right mind would sleep with someone who lives in the suburbs.

That beind said, sub par DJs drink free, so come out tonight!

November 19, 2008 at 10:02 am
Rick Says:

I’m looking forward to seeing what records came out of spiggy’s closet this week. Keep up the good work Dan.
