The Mantuan sculptor and goldsmith Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi also known as Antico (c. 1455-1528) was a pioneer in creating exquisite bronze reductions of ancient Roman sculptures such as the Apollo Belvedere (c. 120-140 AD) just as they were coming to light during the Renaissance, fostering their iconic status in western art. In the first exhibition in the United States of Antico's work, some 30 bronze objects in the form of medals, reliefs, busts, and the renowned statuettes showcase his artistic and technical innovations.
This exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with the Frick Collection, New York. The exhibition in Washington is funded by the Robert H. Smith Family Foundation.
