MP3 Picks of The Week:

MP3 Picks of The Week:

January 6, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

This week in my much labored (and questionably edited) MP3 blog rundown: some more Magnetic Fields, new Goldfrapp and a few covers in the mix. Plus some domestic violence for good measure. You know, pretty much what you’ve come to expect of this column.

1. The Magnetic Fields, “Too Drunk to Dream”
You know, it isn’t a week if there isn’t YET ANOTHER Magnetic Fields song leaked from the new, mucho awaited album. This time Stephin Merritt (sounding conspicuously like Panda Bear) in the grand “upbeat music, decidedly un-upbeat lyrics” tradition talks about….well….being drunk.

2. Rooney, “What For”
I watch Gossip Girl.
Shoot me now.
I also liked this song by everyone’s favorite free association racists Rooney which appeared on said gem of teenage drama this past week (which was created by Josh Schwartz of “The OC” who made you know of Rooney in the first place).
Shoot me and bury me now.

3. Hot Chip, “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye Cover)
Hot Chip’s resolution for 2008: continue trying to cover/remix every song in the whole wide world.
Even those that don’t need covering, because there’s no way you could do better than what was done the first time around.
Like this one.
More like “Coitus Interuptus”.

and from the same post:

4. Jens Lekman “You Can Call me Al” (Paul Simon cover)
Whatever Jens is serving, I’ll eat it. Especially if its all acousticed our and heartbreaking like this.

5. Goldfrapp “”A&E” + Remixes”
Alison is back!
And while it is not necessarily the electro dancey sex we’d come to expect, we should still all welcome her with open arms.
Plus, you know, some people already remixed it.

6. Helio Sequence “Keep Your Eyes Ahead”
Helio Sequence has their new album coming out in February on Subpop and if this fuzzed-out dance nugget is anything to go by, we should all be looking forward to it.

7.Shins “Phantom Limb”
Ok, I KNOW YOU ALL ALREADY OWN THIS record but a. its a wonderful track and b. this past week Shins member Martin Crandall was arrested for domestic violence against America’s Next Top Model Elyse Sewell (!!!!)’s limbs, so you know, it all comes full circle.

i don’t know which is worse: posting the the story about your own domestic violence case in your personal blog or the fact that i am actually commenting on it. probably the latter. shame on me.

the entire shins cd kicks enormous ass (like crandall, apparently) because it flows so well. track 10 is my favorite (girl sailor).

What the hell were they thinking with that Sexual Healing cover? lol

My sense of the Hot Chip cover is that it’s going for a geek narrative voice — here’s someone who really needs sexual healing, but instead they’re lost in the sterility of an emotional echo chamber. I’m not saying it’s successful, but I posted it because I thought it was an interesting take on the lyric.

Good calls on all. Thanks for the linkbacks!
