MP3 Picks of The Week:

MP3 Picks of The Week:

January 2, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

This week’s batch of picks from the blog universe includes some major undeniables. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Be prepared to have them stuck in your brain within (nano)seconds:

1. Puppini Sisters “Crazy in Love” (Beyonce cover)
The Puppini Sisters are sort of an Andrews Sisters/Pippettes hybrid, but don’t hold that against them. What you SHOULD hold against them is that this “Crazy in Love” via Triplets of Bellville nugget is so goddamn catchy it will make you obsessed with this song all over again just as you were done exterminating the original from your subconscious.

also check out this take on “Wuthering Heights” and dare to resist:

2. Afternoon Naps “Clean Bill of Health”
First of, how great of a name is “Afternoon Naps”?
second of all, “Clean Bill of Health” which sounds like the best New Years’ resolution you can make is an upbeat gem that won’t put you to sleep. Au contraire.
(I am also now, apparently doing puns in this column, which are the lowest form of humor, but I lost all my brain cells and a few I didn’t even know I had last night so….be patient.)

3. Justice, “Phantom Pt. 1 & 2 (Soulwax Remix)”
Soon to be unmissable and undeniable at pretty much every dancefloor you step on.

4. Glasvegas, “Daddy’s Gone”
Scotland is the new Sweden.
Last year brought us the 1990s and this year will be (hopefully) filled with the joy that is Glasvegas.

5. Tom Petty and Eddie Vedder, “Rainy Day Women”
Tom Petty and Eddie Vedder (stoned) on a stage somewhere, covering Bob Dylan.
This one goes out to Mike.

6. Ennio Morricone - Cavallina a Cavallo (as picked by MGMT)
Ok, so You ain’t no Picasso did an adorable/amazing thing this Christmas: they got all sorts of awesome people to make mix tapes for their readers and then gave away the MP3s like its…well, Christmas. Fishboy, Holy Fuck, Girl Talk…they were all in on it…as was the MGMT, which, if you read this column, you know I am a pathetic superfan of (Jan. 16th, them, yeasayer, Cat, me, happy).
Their theme was “Creeptastic Xmas” and here is what they had to say about this Ennio gem:

This sultry little number registers pretty high on the creepballs scale. You can’t help but laugh when she giggles so giddy and gay, but, pray tell, what’s so funny? Is it the northern Italian gremlin playfully nibbling your pinkie toe? We don’t know because we haven’t yet seen the film. It’s not entirely sexual, not entirely innocent, but entirely creepballs.

7. The Zombies “This Will Be Our Year” (as picked by Justin Rice from Bishop Allen)
And on the same note (which I know makes me kinda lazy) the next day Justin from Bishop Allen picked this pop perfection from the Zombies (also played at the Washington Social Christmas) which, no matter which way you look at it, is the best way to ring in the 2008. Enjoy. Forever.
