MP3 Picks Of The Week

MP3 Picks Of The Week

September 8, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

We have not done this post in a while but last week was a cavalcade of interweb sonic goodness so, the time, as they say, IS NOW.

1. The Mountain Goats and Kaki King: “Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is in Another Castle”
Two of BYT favorites join forces to sing a song. From a toad’s perspective. As I type this, John Foster is becoming obsessed with every note in it.

2. The Kooks, “Kids” (MGMT cover)
I still maintain that The Kooks are 12 years old. So, while they will not be able to drink legally at their sold-out 930 club show, maybe they will be able to bust out this stellar cover of my favorite youth inflected MGMT song (which is saying something since aren’t all their songs about youth?)

3. Cat Power, “Space Oddity” (David Bowie cover)
Speaking of covers, Chan Marshall goes and covers Bowie.
Only it is not for the next Jukebox album it is for a Lincoln commercial.
Still, I’ll take it. And love it.

4. Jenny Lewis “The Next Messiah”
Or, more like a youtube sketch.
More music, less “me and my friends are quirky and famous” videos Jenny.

5. I’m from Barcelona “Music Killed Me”
Big, brassy, choral and not from Barcelona (but then everyone new that by now).
The Spanish imposters from Sweden are back and while maybe not quite as catchy as three years a go, more fun than most nonetheless.

6. Britt Daniel (w/Janet Weiss) - “Who Backs Your Money?”
Spoon premiered some new songs @ Pitchfork music festival and has been playing them live since.
Solid quality MP3s are finally out.
Its a feeding frenzy out there, so get them soon

7. Jeff Buckley: “Three is a Magic Number”
YES.

John Foster Says:

Guilty.

Loving that Cat Power as well. Amazing song with an amazing singer so hard to screw up even with a commercial.

Al Says:

That is, indeed, a great MGMT cover.
