MP3 Picks: Covering all Bases Edition

MP3 Picks: Covering all Bases Edition

May 28, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Nobody is getting hurt this week. Now, while some of the most buzz from this week comes courtesy of Sigur Ros and the most undeniable EP of the year thus far by way of Music Go Music I have somehow managed to ween myself off of both and pick some other songs you and your loved ones may enjoy in a mixtape this week.

1. Bodies of Water - Under The Pines
Speaking of “Music Go Music”, Meredith’s other band the very wonderful (but totally different) Bodies of Water have a new album cruising out on July 22nd. Here is a sampler. Leaving you definitely hungry for more.

2. Islands, “The Big Ship”
Somewhere in between recording one of the better albums of 08, touring all over and being occasionally mean to the audiences around the world, Nick & Co found time to stop by Daytrotter studios, and seemingly without any prep churn out this great Brian Eno cover.

3. Love Is All, “Darling Nikki” (Prince cover)
I remember seeing Love is All with 15 other people at DC9 two and a half years a go.
This US tour (and Covers EP) around, the buzz is bigger, bolder and dirtier than ever.

4. The National, “Without Permission” (Caroline Martin cover)
Its Covers EP WEEK ALL AROUND!
I have never been quite as obsessed with The National as most people think I should be, but let me tell you one thing, whether its “Pretty in Pink” or this sad, sad Caroline Martin cover, they wrap their baritone tones around a song that is not theirs, they slay me every time.

5. Ida, “The Pain of Loving You” (Dolly Parton cover)
Pretty.
Pretty heartbreaking.
(want more: for another good recent Dolly cover go here)

and now for the not-previously-recorded token songs:

6. Adventure, “Battle Cat”
Once upon a time I was in the midst of a myspace courtship (stop laughing) with some kid in New York and he sent me an Adventure song (seriously STOP laughing). I sooooooo didn’t get it. And I told him that.
What I know now, that I am older and wiser, is that any manchild out there, needs a soundtrack to their video game/cheap but fun psychedelic/pseudo suburban adventure they went on when they were 14 and won’t abandon ever. And this song fits the bill perfectly.

and on that note:

7. Ratatat “Mirando”
More of the same.
Only a little more polished.
Which I am not sure whether it makes it cooler or not.
One thing is for sure-through the miracle of online album leaks I can now safely say-LP3 WILL BE FUN.
