Download: Escape from Moneytown

All signs point to Moneytown being rather epic tonight @ Dahlak.
Here is a little primer, courtesy of Kevin aka DJ Nitekrawler:

The following mix was recorded live between 2 and 3am on Friday October 3rd using 45RPM records & pent up energy left over from the previous nights vice presidential debate. You might notice that there are 2 records from the Carolinas up in the mix. My man Jason Perlmutter (NC) was to be the guest of honor at Moneytown later that night, so I guess Carolina was on my mind. The only additions to the set are the intro that seemed like a good idea at 3am, a sound effect half way though, and short endtro. Most of those additives came from a Gremlins storybook 45. Enjoy!

1- Brightlights - Motor City Funk
This track has always been a favorite of mine. How can you go wrong with all that energy and the tremendous drum and vocal breakdown? DO YOU have a motha?

2- Eddie Bo - Were doing it (thang) pt. 2
A classic deep funk track which is tough to get on vinyl, this cut is heavier than truck full of elephants. Eddie Bo released a ton of singles out of his home base of New Orleans during the 60s and 70s, the most recognizable being the classic “Hook and Sling”, (you can find that 45 in almost any major town), but this one is even more likely to get heads nodding with it’s raw power and infectious vocals.

3- Incomparable Seven - Funky Grand Paw
If my Grandpa was this funky, I’d probably be hanging out at his retirement home tonight now rather than a BYT event. SICK.

4- Johnny Ross - Big Bruce pt. 2
Ok now comes the Johnny Ross. An oddball Chicago piece, the track just kills it with the effects and wild sax decay. Spaced out stuff plus rawness at the same time.

5- Showmen Inc. - The Tramp
It’s difficult to listen to this track and not sing along with at least: “Traaamp from Funky Broaaaadway!!” A bad ass drum break for an intro and an end knock the power up to 11.

6- The Soul Generals - Grandma’s Funky Popcorn
Ok. So Grandpa got funky, and now it’s time for Grandma. But unlike Grand Paw, Grandma’s got to get serious boozed up before she can bust a move. The Soul Generals were an obscure funk/soul outfit from Alabama and as far as I know, this is the only record they ever cut. Not bad for a first and last effort.

7- Little Oscar - The Message
Little Oscar was a soulful blues singer who made an important decision to get ridiculously funky. Super-ridiculously-outta-control-funky. And I like it.

8- Gamith - Darkness
One of my favorite songs of all time, this Psych-Funk outfit hails from South Carolina. I think that if you played this at my funeral, I’d vibrate in my coffin.

9- Young Disciples and Co. - Crumbs from the table
This song is a healthy dose of social consciousness and soul wrapped ever so tightly together and served hot like a Cilantro Egg wrap from Dos Gringos (naw mean?) Good stuff from this Missouri group.

10- Dr. Walker’s Soul Medicine - Funky Prescription
A completely unknown collective, but man can they cook. Take their prescription.

11- MUGO - Organize
Mugo was a NE Washington DC group who played and recorded in the early to mid 70s. Kenny Dope and I re-released this 45 last year on his record label “Kay-dee” We have an LP in the works which will feature both this track, (plus the flip of the 45), and a bunch of unreleased tracks. Should be out sometime in 09′.

12- Mongoose - King Cobra
Ahhhhh, a fantastic track. What’s better than a funky falsetto addressing a King Cobra’s demise? Those Carolina horns never fail to move a crowd…………and with that, I conclude the mix. Hope you enjoyed it! (if so, post up and I’ll make another for next month).
