My special lady (sorry boys!) took me to see Sondre Lerche at 9:30 Club last night. The highlight was probably the set closer Two Way Monologue. I decided to try out the iTunes Genius feature to see what else it recommended based on this song. It made me a pretty solid playlist with a bunch of my favorites including Me & Mia by Ted Leo, Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens, Autumn Sweater by Yo La Tengo, The Start of Something by Voxtrot, and this one, Very Loud by Shout Out Louds:
I LOVE THIS SONG! I’ve been listening to them a lot on my semi-frequent trips back to DC, they keep me awake and I know every word to both their albums.
and Michael, yes, it’s about time. You can even put all you jazz and big band on it, and I’m sure that Canadian radio station you listen to had podcasts that you could download.
November 25, 2008 at 8:12 amAmanda - if I got one it would just to be to store music on and use at home. I’d never walk around with one. I’d miss the sounds of the city and, more importantly, my own thoughts, which are pretty fucking brilliant.
November 25, 2008 at 8:25 amAfter having an iPod for 6 years I can’t imagine what it would even be like not having the same huge music collection at home, work, in my car, on a plane, walking to 7-11. What do people even do these days if they don’t have an iPod? Mp3 CD’s? MiniDisc? DVD-Audio? I don’t get it.
November 25, 2008 at 9:25 amCale. We think.
November 25, 2008 at 9:32 amOh right. Convenience obvi equates to lack of thought.
November 25, 2008 at 9:46 amNot that I have to defend against that ridiculous accusation, as it is obviously one of your most uninformed and nonsensical statements on this site, but to make matters worse, my iPod happens to have GB after GB of audio books, U of Michigan physics lectures, PBS documentaries, news podcasts, etc, etc.
November 25, 2008 at 10:00 ammethinks the lady doth protest too much
November 25, 2008 at 10:05 amI’ll take that as a win.
November 25, 2008 at 10:34 amNo it is not a win because your premise was incorrect, hence the above quote. You asked what people did if they didn’t have an iPod. As one without an iPod I replied “We think” which is true - I walk around and I think about things I see and hear in the city without being distracted by music pouring into my aural.
You took that as an insult or slight, imagining that I was implying that you do not think. That was the very point in which I won.
November 25, 2008 at 10:56 amNo, my question was what do people do when they want to listen to music these days if they don’t have an iPod. It was an honest question. “We think.” is not an answer to that question.
Also - you said in your previous comment that you can’t think if you listen to an iPod (that you don’t have) while walking around the city taking in all those bus engines or whatever. So saying “We think.” implies that I, walking around with an iPod, do not think. Which again doesn’t make any sense, which is why I commented back.
November 25, 2008 at 11:05 amit’s a draw. you two are missing each other’s points.
i have an ipod, but don’t like having shit in my ear and wires to deal with, so i never use it. so to answer cale’s general (and hypothetical?) question, i personally only listen to music through my home stereo and i only play cds in my car, which i usually burn from my music collection at home and then ruin the cd within days by throwing it on my floorboards. i’m waiting until i get a new(er) car that i can plug an ipod directly into. this has been my two cents and it’s worth nearly a ha’penny.
wtf is that koala bear looking thing in the thumbnail? a koala bear?
November 25, 2008 at 11:38 amEddie - it’s almost 2009, get your iPod working in your car. Jesus.
November 25, 2008 at 12:47 pmJust because Cale selected a crappy song of the day(yes, again) doesn’t mean he is a bad person. That simply means he’s someone you should never consult on yur iPod seection.
And what are you two twerps doing here? Shoo.
November 25, 2008 at 1:29 pmhow do i get it working in my car? not that i drive that much, but i have to have my musak while doing it.
November 25, 2008 at 1:39 pmeddie - well you sure don’t have that Metallica cassette anymore.
Cale - I still win.
November 25, 2008 at 2:55 pmErnest - Please stop. Nobody thinks you’re clever, you just come off as creepy. Especially when you have conversations with yourself using different names.
I have many many many satisfied customers when it comes to what to fill an iPod with. It’s one of the few things I’m really good at. You’re wrong. I win. The end.
Eddie - it came up when I googled “cute koala”
depends on your car/stereo…
November 25, 2008 at 3:13 pmcale - i just checked my car stereo. the brand is “ford”. is that a good one?
November 25, 2008 at 5:19 pmha
is it standard size? if so just go to some place like Tweeter, oh wait they went out of business, like Circuit City, oh wait they went out of business, like Best Buy and just get a cheap in dash unit with a line in. Don’t get some stupid ass iPod controlling bullshit. iPods are great cause of the UI, why would you want to use anything else. You just need a line in.
If it’s not standard size you’ll have to have some car audio shop let you know what the options are.
November 25, 2008 at 5:24 pmYou’re an odios, banal, deluded homo, Cale. I hope it doesn’t offend you.
Michael Jackson, Prince, Ted Leo… This is really, really, really lame, Cale. Your customers? I daresay they are ignoramuses such as yourself. Leave in silence, Cale.
November 25, 2008 at 5:32 pmkinda makes you miss adam.
November 25, 2008 at 5:46 pmeddie, does your car stereo have a cassette player?
if so, get one of these:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6323686&st=cassette+adapter&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1077625430711
if not, get one of these:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7750249&st=ipod+transmitter&type=product&id=1140394452806
sigh… yeah
although I’m not sure who was more odios…
November 25, 2008 at 6:03 pm@Ernest
It’s odious, you bloody village idiot you.
Eddie - please don’t get either of those things, they are for girls and married people. Get an in dash stereo with a line in. Period. Or some custom get up.
November 25, 2008 at 6:13 pmI’d say, y o u were, Cale. Also, that positive attitude of yours sadly betrays your pathetic state of denial.
November 25, 2008 at 6:15 pmHey Fitsum, Wantsum?
Wtf, Fitsum. What kind of stupid handle is that? Fitsum..
November 25, 2008 at 6:19 pmI made this a while back:

chad - thanks for the tip. i was wondering about going through the tape player. but, i guess i’ll take cale’s advice and get a line-in since you ARE… well, you know… m… ma…. ma….
haha. j/k my friend. i am the one who is geezin’ over here.
November 25, 2008 at 6:52 pmfor the record, my car stereo does have a line-in, which i use.
i was just trying to save eddie time and/or money.
November 26, 2008 at 4:04 ameddie get one of the ipod decks that plugs into the power thingy so that it can charge all the time. unless you get a usb line-in. do they even make those? after thinking about it though i only know one guy that has the plug in thing like i have, and he hardly equates with “man.” so cale’s much more expensive advice is probably best, but then you do drive a ford suv and i really don’t think it’d be worth it.
cale, i’m going to reiterate how much i love this song and the shout out louds.
ernest, fitsum is his real name. what kind of name is ernest? it’s probably not even your real name. there’s no need for you to be so rude. stop it.
November 26, 2008 at 8:20 amalso, i just noticed a tiny smiley face at the bottom of the page. it’s kind of make my morning.
November 26, 2008 at 8:21 amYou seeing things, my dear.

November 26, 2008 at 10:25 amYou should rid of your pedrorosis, Pedro. It impairs your ability.

November 26, 2008 at 2:59 pmOk, no idea why it’s there but it stays.
November 26, 2008 at 3:03 pmNo, this will not to be borne. Will please someone have it removed? It bothers me a great deal.
November 26, 2008 at 3:16 pm
