Another day, another favorite song guest spot, this time from DJ Will Eastman, who will be doing his Bliss dance party at the Cat on Sat.
I lived in Minneapolis in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It’s where the musical me formed, underage, sneaking into Happy Mondays shows, ubiquitous at indie record stores, never stealing anything except useful bits of information from the clerks. Everyone had a Replacements story. The time they played an older sister’s prom, the conversation with Tommy outside First Avenue, after one of their shows. Bob Stinson, everywhere at night, drunk and high, a man in his 30’s partying with kids our age. No one seemed to mind. There he was at White Castle, at a random house party, the Replacement, replaced. Everyone knew how Westerberg had disposed of him and his demons, the story of him puking on the studio ceiling. Everyone knew he was now slowly, unavoidably committing suicide.
I borrowed Let It Be from a girl and never gave it back, not because I didn’t intend to. We lost touch with one another, tossed to and fro, and I being less fastidious about returning borrowed records–sacred records–as I am today, simply packed it in boxes, first to various apartments in Minneapolis, then D.C. If you somehow happen to read this, I owe you a debt of gratitude for the company of Paul Westerberg and gang. If I knew then this song would resonate as it still does I’d have anticipated a lot more grief than what came, but it’s not bad, to hold on to a bit of mope, to hold on to the songs you love.

Good track for sure. Great pick…one of my fave album covers.
September 25, 2008 at 10:30 amNice pick, Im more a fan of androgynous for a slow tempo song off this record, but selah.
September 25, 2008 at 10:31 amIt goes without saying that I love this (and think Cale is coo coo for his “overrated” comment last week directed at The Mats) but I will say it anyway:
I love this.
September 25, 2008 at 11:44 amJust cause something is overrated doesn’t mean they’re not great or I don’t own all their stuff and listen to them all the time. The Mats just get a little too much love. Just a little.
September 25, 2008 at 11:51 amDidn’t I already establish that the run of “Let It Be” to “Tim” to “Pleased to Meet Me” made it impossible to consider them overrated or bequeath too much love upon them? So few bands/songwriters can point to a level of excellence in those terms that you can’t begrudge them the accolades or adoration that come with it (and thats what using a word like “overrated” does.) It’s the same reason we all still hold Eddie Van Halen in high regard as a guitar player…
Me thinks your pants are on too tight.
September 25, 2008 at 12:00 pmwell done Will
