BYT’s Favorite Song of the Day

BYT’s Favorite Song of the Day

September 18, 2008 by John Foster Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

I can not lie. Cale has been making my mornings with his left of center funk selections. In that mindset, I knew exactly what I wanted to hear next. So I set about asking in my sweetest voice (if you go for the bad cop approach, that fella just folds like a deck of cards and is useless for days) and put in my request. He accepted my recommendation (odd) and in that hedgehog charm of his managed to convince me that I should also write it up. Hmmm…

None the less, here we are ready to get to wiggling in our office chairs. Liquid Liquid seemed the obvious choice to set off this Thursday. But what track to choose? “Caverns” seemed too easy. “Optimo” or “Scraper” or better yet “Groupmegroup” would be killer but I wanted something that showcased their insane groove as well as Dennis Young’s wonderful marimba playing. This is a jacked up version helped along by the nice folks at DFA of “Bellhead” doubled to a glorious percussion parade with Salvatore Principato’s Lydonesque wail over the top. This is the sound that the last ten years of dance rock are based on and the foundation for hip hop (see “The Message”.) Dig it.

Genius. Shit, I’m going to listen to this again–on headphones this time.

Oooh, that reversed bell hit at the end is PERFECT.

I’ve played this out to mainstreamers and beatniks alike and NOBODY is immune to this track. This has been the best week of mp3 postings on BYT in memory.

To keep with the funky vibe of this week’s picks, tomorrow’s song should be this monster:

Sidechains - Dr. Funk

Whoops wrong link (though the song above is still great)

Way to step up your music posting game, BYT!

Adam, I’m feeling all the Sidechains stuff, too. Funny, artists naming themselves after recording techniques all the sudden.

Anyone interested in Sidechains, I’d suggest buying their stuff at 320 to get the full effect, as the 112 mp3s floating around the music blogs sound grainy.

Here’s a good one on Beatport:

Thanks for the Beatport link, Will! I’ve been looking all over for 320s of Sidechains’ stuff.

The production-technique-as-band-name-thing has a lot of room to grow.

Ex:
Noise gate
Resonator
Jonny and the Low-pass filters
