Brightest Young Things

William is DJing Razzmatazz @ The Black Cat this Saturday, May 30, so he’s taking over the song of the day for the rest of the week.  It’s the official unofficial after party for BYT Summer Camp, get in free with a God’s Eye.* -Ed.

The Big Pink are from London and are two 7" singles into their career (there's also a Japan-only 12", but, all right, anyway). It's a pretty standard format: two spotty blokes with guitars, a drum machine and a bag full of effects pedals.

Their first single, Too Young to Love had me intrigued, but, ultimately, not over-awed:

Then, 4ad signed them. At first, when I heard they signed St. Vincent and the Big Pink at roughly the same time, I thought, eh, terrible name, St. Vincent's beautiful but not terribly interesting, whatever.

Then I heard Actor Out of Work, thanks to Svetlana.

Uh oh. If "Actor" is that good...then maybe...Actor was issued as a limited edition, heavy-gauge vinyl release, as was the Big Pink's debut on 4ad, titled "Velvet." I ordered both.

The cover art for their second proper single is a gorgeous 4ad design - a throwback to the glory days of Vaughn Oliver. The photos I've seen online don't do it justice - inlaid gold foil lettering, etc.:

Velvet

It looks stunning, and feels great in your hand. And the song? Well, suffice it to say, I've spent an hour listening to it on repeat, and I'm not even close to being sick of it. So, from my head to yours, enjoy.

Wow, right?

*probably not true
