If you have ever seen me dance (an opportunity some may say rare, but ultimately rewarding) you know that if there is one thing I love and that that thing is to twirl (followed closely by “the dip”). I am pretty sure it all (darkly) harkens back to being rejected from ballet school for being 11 and 5′8″ (Eastern Europe IS cruel) and watching my mom try on her party dresses when I was a kid (they always, ALWAYS had a swing to them) but I am pre-dispositioned to be a twirler. I could fight it, but there is no point to it.
And the song I am choosing for everyone’s enjoyment (but mainly my own, as I am selfish that way) is Nick Lowe’s “Tonight” which you can get right now on his reissue of “Jesus Of Cool”, the best (titled) album you probably don’t have yet. Everything on it is a gem, from “Cruel to be Kind” to “Halfway to Paradise” to “I love my Label”, point blank 20+ songs of genius.
But “Tonight” does it for me, mostly because, while it is so unabashedly twirl worthy and old school, the fact that Nick is such a tongue-in-cheek, and sometimes in between teeth, songwriter, my inner (mostly ashamed) “play it cool” person still can enjoy it while the twirls are taking place.

Bonus: a rare Nick video, not of this song, but of a song I love just as much.
More Nick Lowe for EVERYONE!
Now go, make someone happy this weekend.
And
I would put money on your being very happy then, Paul.
July 10, 2008 at 10:36 amIs it just me or does Britt Daniel from Spoon look like a younger Nick Lowe??
July 10, 2008 at 11:28 amHey Svet - check out The Tacticians (they are on emusic I think) with their very Loweish twirling tunes. I like them for whatever thats worth.

The only thing that would make me happy this weekend is to see Svet twirl and do the “move”
