I've really been digging this Moorish Music from Mauritania album lately. It's a family affair, dad on guitar and tidinit (see pic), daughters on percussion and backup vocals, and mom, the incredible Dimi Mint Abba, belting out the spine shivering improvised Islamic poetry. Dimi's father authored the Mauritanian national anthem and they come from a long line of low-caste West African bards, wandering musicians, and poets. This recording was made in 1990, and while she is most famous for the song "Sawt Elfan" (translated Art's Plume, arguing that artists are more valuable to society than warriors) I personally like Yar Allahoo the best. It's haunting and beautiful and unintentionally psychedelic. Enjoy:

God loves a cheerful giver.
This is pretty, interesting and yet esoteric. They do speak French there, no?
