The Mixtape kids are taking over for the rest of the week culminating in our big Jesus Camp DJ collaboration on Sat. First up is Shea with a two for one special:
Jayne (Wayne) County is a notorious American male-to-female transsexual punk performer and musician whose career peaked in the mid-70s. She's one of my guilty pleasures. County was definitely influential in the CBGB and Max's Kansas City scene; I imagine she influenced girl-rockers like Debbie Harry. Her songs are hit and miss, but performances with her band The Electric Chairs were pretty over-the-top. A couple of her songs use religious imagery including "Storm the Gates of Heaven" with it's quirky intro and "Rock & Roll Resurrection" with the lyric: "Rock me Jesus/Roll me Lord/Wash me in the blood of Rock n Roll." Her biggest hit was "Fuck Off," with the amazing line that can be very effective when you don't want to mince words..."If you don't want to fuck me, Fuck Off!"
