Audio Preview: Sky Drops / Screen Vinyl Image / Julie Ocean

Because coming up with new terms of describing shoegazey psyche pop is a near impossible task, I decided to let the music speak for its (Dreamy) self for tonights show at Velvet which has a very solid triple threat post-gaze/something or other trio of bands (2 of them local) in it: SKY DROPS, SCREEN VINYL IMAGE (that Peter went Bananas over a few weeks a go) and ex-Velocity girlers Julie Ocean.

Here goes everything:

Screen Vinyl Image debuted in 2007, formed by ex-members of Alcian Blue and kicked off with a well-received EP (The Midnight Sun), a single (Chaser), and a summer and fall of touring. (including shows with A Place To Bury Strangers and Ulrich Schnauss) While keeping one foot in psychedelia and shoegaze, and stepping into electronic realms (with influences from early house/italo disco to modern stuff from the kitsune/modular labels), Screen Vinyl Image use analog synths, drum machines, and guitars to create a sound that is familiar and fresh.

filmed in a Neutra house in Los Angeles the last time The Sky Drops toured Southern California. They are currently recording their full length album which is due Spring 2008.
what people say: “The guy/girl duo plays delightful pop tunes awash in tight harmonies, heavy, thick, and dense shoe-gaze guitar melodies, and an underlying garage feel that is hard to resist. It’s bubblegum yet hard; rugged and loose yet clean and crisp.” - Bibabidi

Julie Ocean - D.C.’s fledgling outfit spins cute, sugary, poppy yarns… But what else could you expect from an Undertones-referencing band assembled from the spare parts of Velocity Girl, The Saturday People, and Severin? The power-pop quartet is so green that, presently, its only recorded musical output is the four songs on its MySpace page. However, it probably won’t be long before toe-tapping songs such as “At the Appointed Hour” and “Here Comes Danny” end up on some lovelorn high schooler’s mix tape made for an unrequited crush…” - The D.C.
