Gays fear roses. Yes, demographically, we do watch Martha Stewart and tend to fawn over fabulous floral arrangements. But, roses have struck horrific anxiety in more than one gay man.
I'm specifically referring to roses peddled by men-with-baskets who creep in and out of restaurants and bars along the Adams Morgan and U Street corridors. Its embarrassing enough for a straight guy who has to decide between looking like a douche by buying are rose for his date, or looking cheap by not. A gay man must face this too, as well as the possibility of his date turning to him upon receipt of such rose and asking "Dude, seriously, what the....?" Even gay men aren't that gay.
In a week where gay men across the District desperately search, largely in vain, for masculine valentines and butch bouquets our friends at TheNewGay.net are offering a solution for those who want to be gay for another guy, but just not that gay.
On Valentine's night, TheNewGay.net hosts an alterna-queer party at Solly's Tavern (formerly a much-loved Ethiopian restaurant/punk dive) at 11th and U Streets. The "alterna" in the tag doesn't refer to alternative lifestyles, but rather those looking for an alternative to the alternative lifestyle (George Michael will only be played with irony, sandwiched in between Minor Threat and Fugazi). "Your straight friends will actually enjoy this party," claim TheNewGays.
This is the first party thrown by TheNewGay.net - a gay hipsterish blog (named by BYT as one of its "Top Ten" gay things about DC) which claims to be for anyone over the rainbow.

I cannot grace a party without pupusas thrown by people who have never heard of Fugazi. (I gorged myself on pupusas on Saturday while listening to "I am a Patient Boy" on my iPod)
