Wham City, that collective of brightly-colored pixies, has released their as-of-now finalized venue information and Whartscape 2008 schedule…and boy is it a doozy. For those of you new to Baltimore and the joys of Wham City, here’s a little oral history from Wham City member Adam Endres.
And for your convenience, here’s an abbreviated background: Wham City’s original members met at SUNY Purchase while going to art school and collectively moved to Baltimore circa 2004, where they founded the institution now known as Wham City. Since then, they have held 2 (soon to be 3) Whartscapes along with many performances such as Beauty & the Beast and Jurassic Park as well as the innumerable art showings and concerts they put on or are affiliated with. Musical artists that have spawned directly from, or are closely affiliated friends of Wham City include Dan Deacon, the Death Set, Adventure, Ponytail, Ecstatic Sunshine and many many more.
Whartscape is basically Wham City’s once-a-year gathering of as many of their closest friends, contemporaries and acquaintances together in one weekend, spread across a few select venues to perform. Set up as a more spontaneous and DIY alternative to Baltimore City’s annual Artscape festival, the relationship has grown more symbiotic and complementary than competitive. Given the reach of the collective, the roster of performers this year is, frankly, staggering in size and diversity.
But you know what’s even more spectacular? The prices. Tickets to Sat/Sun day shows and Thurs/Fri nights are $12 each, plus $.67 Paypal fee. Sat/Sun nights are free with ticket stub or $5 without. All-weekend pass: $40 plus $1.50 Paypal fee.
