Brightest Young Things

The Ting Tings are playing 930 club today.
You should totes go since it is probably the most fun you'll have at a show this week, and now, because we like to remind you how we liked everything before everyone else (or at least Pitchfork or Ipod commercial music supervisors) did here is some previous coverage of us "discovering them" and further liking them:

January 15th 2008
(do you even remember what you liked back then?)
by William on "That's Not My Name"

Yet another amazing tune, this time with sexy female vocals and a propulsive dance-floor beat, on a long-sold-out 7”. There have been comparisons to Peaches, but this is better than her collective output. Think Karen O drunk and relaxed and having a damn good time, doing a Go-Gos cover to the music of My Sharona and you’re almost there. Fun.

youtube does not allow the embedding of this. BOOOOOOO

So-you get this instead:

+

John Foster's intricate dissection of their album art

.

And........

Did we mention that youtube does not allow embedding any of their videos?
All the more reason to see them play "Shut up and Let me Go" live today.

That is all.

God loves a cheerful giver.

i had planned on going to this show, but since recently becoming carless and listening to their album all the way through again, i've decided not to. their album, while decent, i don't think it'll stand up, live. but i'll definitely go see them after their second album.

i hate using all caps...

but...

THEY ARE AMAZING LIVE AND EVERYONE SHOULD GO SEE THEM!

unless you hate amazing live shows, of course. and unless you hate pop music. and unless you hate fun.

if you answered yes to any above, definitely DO NOT go see them...

i never listen to their album all the way through, but they put on a fantastically fun - and shockingly intense and solid - live performance.

4 years ago Amanda said

i do like all of those things.

do you remember how long their set was? because they only have ten or twelve songs, so just enough for a full set, but i doubt they'll play the full album.

this was a unique experience because they opened an early show at mercury lounge in new york. it was a pretty random, last minute billing (on a monday no less). but, at that show they played a solid 35 or so minutes, which is pretty standard for opening acts really.

i haven't heard what their headlining timing is...(if they are even headlining the 9:30???? haven't paid attention to that....)

i have never jumped up and down more in my life than during the live version of that's not my name....holy crap. the show is worth it for that song alone...

reluctantly going to this due to a free ticket
the girl's got an overbite and mostly squawks instead of sings
not hot

glad CSS is due to release their new album "Donkey"
hope they tour again soon outside Virgin Fest
which i won't suffer through again this year

What is with the people who hustle to get a spot with good sight line and are then somehow completely unmoved (worse, unmoving) to eminently danceable music like the Ting Tings!? Those people bug me. Fun show, they knew what got 'em there and gave the people what they wanted, including an extended version of the IPod-tastic "Shut Up and Let Me Go."

lily: agreed, she's got a horrible overbite. but i think she's a got a great voice when she uses it - traffic light.

there was an overwhelming number of parents and middleschoolers at this show. i talked to one dad (button down shirt open over a white undershirt, fishing cap, etc) who "dragged" his 13 and 16 year olds to the show, they had not heard the ting tings before. two girls who i shoved past (i have no shame at shows and if you're not dancing then you can bet i will shove past you) were talking about how they found out about them via the itunes commercial.

i have yet to see this commercial, but by god it attracted a horrible crowd. lucky for me i managed to make it up front (right behind people that were not moving) and dancedancedanced with some intern from oklahoma who'd never been to 930.

the show was great, except i felt that they were a bit arrogant - i hate it when i see anyone treat instruments carelessly like she did.

also, did anyone catch that when will would stop a record expecting the crowd to fill in, they didn't? they didn't even recognize morrissey. so sad.

hummmm. when did people start judging bands on their overbites???

wow.

anyway, i'm glad you guys had fun! or, maybe you seemed to have fun?!

4 years ago Lily said

went to the show last night and gave 'em a shot
i guess they're music is just too repetitive for me
i want developed melodies

granted she can sing when she wants to
though contrived and breathy at times
but most of the time she chooses to squawk
which doesn't sit well with me

and this comes from a former obsessed Tori Amos fan
granted she'd scream a lot, but what a voice

as for treating instruments carelessly, she just learned the guitar last year, guess the lessons didn't include respect for instruments, which again, doesn't sit well with me

plus having seen the greatness that is Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke on Sunday, she just hits buttons on her keyboard and doesn't know how to channel awesome like Yaz

while they didn't move me, even to dance
i appreciate their efforts in the beats and instrumentals dept

btw, Will dropping Frankly Mr. Shankly was badass

4 years ago Lily said

what i meant about the overbite is that she's not as hot/amazing/sexy/cute as everyone rails on
at least to me
opinion

Overbites are dead fucking sexy.

They covered Frankly, Mr. Shankly? That's awesome.

PS: That tune was on The Queen Is Dead, which is technically an album by The Smiths, not Morrissey. Nitpicky, I know...

PPS: Some of you sound like major elitists, by the way. They carelessly treated their instruments? Seriously? Personally, I go to a show to a show to listen / have fun, not take notes on how someone handles their guitar.

4 years ago Cale said

No - DJ Will Eastman played it, I don't remember them doing any covers (which was unfortunate due to the short setlist, which could have easily been beefed up by a cute cover or two)

Yeah, seriously, how dare they throw a guitar on the ground at a rock show.

4 years ago Martin said

Oh, I see.

Also -- in case you were wondering, "I go to a show to a show" is not proper English. Who knew?

4 years ago Amanda said

what lily said.

and cale: what i mean is that she just seemed careless, most of the time if a band throws their instruments around it's impassioned and in the moment, when she did it, it wasn't like that. it was like "oh, whatever, my roadie will re-tune it for the next song after he brings me another guitar..."

martin: i go to a show to enjoy it as well, but there are other things besides what i hear that make me respect them (or not) more as musicians.

4 years ago Lily said

it's one thing to own how you treat your instrument
e.g. Pete
it's one thing to be careless
e.g. Katie from the Ting Tings

and yes, i'm a musician
violinist of 13 years, vocalist of 8, conductor of 2

i heart Amanda's way of thinkin'

This overbite discussion needs to die a horrible death. Would men be having this conversation? Feminists in the crowd, can I get a whoot whoot? Honestly, I could see a complaint about clothing or a hairstyle--these are things that can be changed!

I really don't see how you could not be moved to wiggle to this music...what music does it?

As far as carelessness with the instruments--imagine playing the same songs, over and over and over for people expecting you to bring energy for that one show they attend; maybe that's what you were picking up on? It's got to get monotonous and despite that I thought they put out a good vibe.

Finally, I'm struck by how two people using instruments that people have been making music with for an awful long time can manage to put out a new sound. I hope the Ting Tings can build on their three amazing songs to make a great follow-up.

actually overbites can be changed too
that's what braces and oral maxiofacial surgery are for

jon: we're narcissistic americans who like to rag on anyone and anything we can to make us feel better about ourselves, especially people more successful than us.

and brits are known for having horrible teeth.

the ting tings are amazing, it just sucks that they know it all too well.

Lily: maxiofacial surgery? wtf? why do you know that? braces, sure, but i think surgery is a bit extreme. i'm going to assume that you have perfect teeth with the help of a dentist.

4 years ago victoryrose said

indeed, the overbite conversation is insane.

but, to SF:

DUDE! her name is billie piper and she is wonderful! her showtime thing is totally new here (i think it has been on in the UK for a year? and i have only seen one episode so far...the secret diary of a call girl...i liked what i saw).

BUT, before that she was rose (the dr's companion) on the new series of dr. who! sigh. she is great. i love her. with a huge love. the new dr. who (both with christopher eccleston and currently the glorious david tennent) is nerdily fantastic.

4 years ago Lily said

great point about humility
it's sexier than eye fucking camera shots with your overbite

dad's a plastic surgeon
my oral maxiofacial surgeon was the guy who removed my wisdom teeth, i didn't have room for them
but plenty of people have the same kind of doc work on their overbite if they have pain associated with their jaw, not enough room for their teeth, or want a more symmetrical form

i don't have perfect teeth to say the least
but i had braces (and evening headgear!), floss daily, brush, visit my dentist every 6 months for checkups and whiten with carbon myeldoxide (sp?), the active agent in Opalescence, every year
my teeth are naturally yellow even though i occasionally drink wine and have never smoked in my life

@Carrie
I know her name. I've seen her on Dr. Who. I'm a decent sized Dr Who fan. The first episode was interesting. Since then it's been just another boring situation dramedy. All the reviews in EW, NYT. Hollywood Reporter etc. that coo like shit over the "Secret Diary..." make me wonder what show they're watching

4 years ago Michael said

Lily - STOP.

Also: overbites are still dead fucking sexy.

sf:
i am going to keep watching with the hope that she shows her boobs.......i did see a nipple pop out in the first episode.....i spent the entire time she was on dr who wanting her to show her boobs. unfortunately, it is a family show. also unfortunately, it seems she has lost quite a bit of weight for her new role...

yes, i have a serious girl crush.

Michael - what is this, mother may i? simon says?
you stop, then i'll stop

if you like overbites so much, start dating horsefaces

i would just like to say that it's threads like this that allow me to laugh outrageously at the drop of a hat. i'm amazed at how far/long this thread has gotten, AND i have perfect teeth, without braces.

michael, feel free to punch me in the face the next time you see me.

Lily - I was trying to keep you from further embarassing yourself. Call me Quixote.

Horsefaces aren't the same as someone with a sexy overbite.
